@Colm12Colm Minimum age, more money, industry funded internal programmes, proper vetting of supervisors are some ideas.

Maybe youre lucky, but I would say not really because you assessed what you were getting into and weighed it's pros and cons rather than just falling into the 'next step'.

@Colm12Colm PhDs open up jobs that value creative,independent thinking but sacrifices a lot. Financially, a PhD typically doesnt return the investment vs working straight after an undergrad. At its worst,supervisors/systematic problems prey on intelligent, naive candidates for cheap labour.

My opinion is PhD positions are taken by people who haven't thought through the process and whether it even lines up with their wants/needs.
