๐คฃ ๐ซ ๐ โYuh found Garvin, did yuh?โ rasped Bud.
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ท Garvin seemed to consider this worthwhile advice. He was not sure that Bud knew of the lifted cache or not; but the chances were good that he did. He did not doubt that Bud knew he had taken the sorrel. Taking it all in all, Bud had reasons to hunt trouble with him.
๐ฒ ๐ ๐น ๐ป ๐ โI reckon,โ said Garvin, pulling his hat down over his brow, โI reckon I better find out.โ
๐ฅณ โฅ๏ธ ๐ค Garvin grinned widely. He had drunk just enough to make him reckless.
โฐ ๐ค ๐ ๐ โYeah?โ Garvin shoved his sombrero back on his head and looked quizzically at his new deputy. โDid he say anythinโ, Pete?โ
๐ฅณ ๐ต ๐ ๐ซ โAw, theyโll likely get loose,โ grunted Bud, as he got up from the table. โIf Jeff Garvin had twice as much sense heโd be half-witted.โ
โ ๐ต ๐ซฑ โ โจ โโโ if I know. The sheriff had taken โem to jail when I got back that night; so I hooked Flintโs .41 and slipped the .45 in its place. When Garvin tried to find it, the danged thing was gone.โ
๐ ๐ค ๐ ๐ซฑ They found out that the hearing was to be held the next day, and unless Garvin already had the gun, there would be no evidence to hold them any longer.
๐ซฑ โญ ๐ ๐ท Jud made known their wants. Pete took them under advisement. He was not a rapid thinker and back in his small brain lurked the feeling that Garvin might not care to have Frawley talk to Flint Moore.
๐ ๐ ๐น ๐ฏ๏ธ Garvin had done this! Bud clenched his teeth. He had divulged too much to Garvin. Had Garvin found the body of the old Indian and was holding it as a club over him? Bud waited for the storm to break, but could see nothing of his horse.
๐ ๐ ๐ง Garvin clutched it by the headstall and succeeded in whirling it around. Rain and wind tore into them and the horse reared and snorted, but Garvin managed to get into the saddle and ride into the shelter of the Pulpit.
๐ ๐พ ๐ซฑ ๐บ ๐ โ Garvin hadnโt the slightest idea who had fired the shot that killed his horse, but he knew where the shots had been fired from. After he had ducked into the brush he got a glimpse of a mounted man riding into the brush near the foot of the Pulpit.
๐ โค๏ธโ๐ฅ ๐๏ธ ๐ He could see that the rider was cutting down the hill, evidently with the intention of intercepting him, in case he went on down toward the cabin. Garvin was no such fool. He knew that the other man had a rifle, and had the odds in his favor.
๐ป ๐ซ ๐ซถ ๐ธ ๐ฟ โบ๏ธ โIt was in his holster, hanging on the bedpost, when Garvin came for it that day.โ
๐ ๐ซฐ ๐ ๐งก โJimmy, you say you saw these men? Was one of them a big manโbigger than Garvin?โ
๐ ๐ซฑ ๐ Jimmy raised up slowly and motioned to Pat to remain where she was. He wormed his way around through the brush for about fifty feet, where he could see Garvin, sitting motionless on his horse and looking toward the head of the coulรฉe.
๐ท ๐คฃ ๐ค โYou keep out of sight, Garvin. Them โโ women wonโt help matters none by talkinโ to Flint and Wild.โ
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ โWell?โ grunted Garvin. โAny harm in that? It must โaโ been the money that feller Devlin stole and planted just before the sheriff caught him. Where is Whitey?โ
๐ฎ ๐ฑ ๐ป Bud looked away for a moment and back to Garvin.
๐พ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ค ๐ Garvin grinned to himself when Bud called Whitey by name, and listened closely for a reply.
