@Pucheault_Lab a quick fix for text, if you're using word, is References > Insert Caption > New Label, then call it Compound and tick "Exclude Label from Caption"; then you can insert the caption at first mention to generate a no. and use cross-reference to insert later mentions.

TMZ was reported to be a safe diazomethane surrogate. Without any supporting data, my team began to study its thermal stability. We found TMZ to be more hazardous than reported.
