Winter wheat genetics have come a long way—delivering stronger agronomics, improved disease resistance, and more value for Canadian farmers.
Growers like Jake Ayre of @southern_seed0 understand that every new variety represents years of investment in plant breeding, delivering tools farmers rely on to manage risk and make the most of every acre.
34 to 1. That's the return @southern_seed0 Jake Ayre puts on public plant breeding.
In his opinion, no other investments comes close.
Winter wheat, once wrecked devastated by fusarium, now out-yields the old checks and resists the offers disease resistance. Stop investing though, and that progress stops halts.

@AAFC_Canada research stations are critical to Canadian plant breeding and innovation.
This week on Parliament Hill, SeCan general manager Jeff Reid joined @JohnBarlowMP, Conservative MPs, and industry leaders to speak against the announced closures and call on government to work with industry to protect the research capacity that supports Canada’s agri-food sector.
Closing these stations would directly impact plant breeding progress, seed innovation, and the long-term competitiveness of Canadian agriculture.

Planting season can be exciting, rewarding… and stressful.
Long days, changing weather, and the pressure to keep everything moving can take a toll.
A quick check-in with yourself and the people around you can go a long way.
Wishing everyone a safe and successful #Plant26

As Canada talks about sovereignty, cuts to public plant breeding continue.
Cribit Seeds co-owner Quentin Martin says the consequences are clear: fewer locally adapted varieties and weaker food security.

I asked some seed growers what variety they’re most excited for in 2026. One name kept coming up: AAC WestKing 🌾
The excitement around this one has been unreal! Excited to see how it performs across the prairies this year. #Plant26#AACWestking#ChooseCertifiedSeed#WestCdnAg
The future of agriculture starts with curiosity! 🧠💡
Janine, SeCan's Stewardship Coordinator, recently spent time in classrooms teaching students about Canadian farming and where food comes from.
Thank you @4AgForLife and @AITCCanada, it's encouraging to see so much enthusiasm from the next generation!

Growers know one season never tells the whole story.
That’s why SeCan varieties are tested in real farm conditions — different soils, weather, management practices, and seasons. All backed by independent trial data.
Because consistency matters more than a headline number.

Changing Canada's breeding system is controversial.
Some, like Greg Stamp of @Stampseeds, argue it's the key to unlocking investment in Canadian plant breeding.
Others argue it could put farmers at a disadvantage.
