The core problem with the U.N. is a lack of any true enforcement mechanism. International organizations work only if member states generally agree on core governing principles and are willing to put their military forces behind such principles. The U.N. has neither.
Brazilian Pres da Silva’s op-ed is incomplete (“The World Needs a Stronger U.N.,” 3/31/26, WSJ). He might be correct that world powers are flouting international law and somebody ought to stop them. But he fails to identify who should.
Stacey and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa. Though we ran against each other, campaigns come and go. What endures is respect for those who dedicate their lives to public service. Colleen served with commitment and cared deeply for Hawaii.
My commentary in The Hill six months ago accurately forecasted the administration’s neocon turn. Below read my op-ed on what the next policy step should be with Iran.

As I stated 6 months ago in this commentary in ‘The Hill’ - with regime change now stated as a goal in Iran, Pres Trump has become the Bush/Clinton neo-con he once scorned. We should all hope for successfully establishing democracy in Tehran.

Putin’s aggression against Ukraine not only sows chaos in Europe but can destabilize Asia also. Read my editorial in today’s Nikkei Asia.

With the President’s action in Venezuela and recent remarks on Iran, my June op-ed in The Hill stands out only even more so today. Trump has fully embraced Bush/Clinton neocon thinking - even if inadvertently - that he’s long scorned. https://t.co/4OETI3RK8u
It has been an honor of a lifetime serving the nation at the ABMC. I welcome the new Trump commissioners Chris LaCivita, Brooks Tucker and Kelly Roberts and wish them every success as I move on to my next step.
Today my wife Stacey and I said goodbye to Rep. Gene Ward. Gene was a man of incredible integrity and dedication. It was an honor for me to have served with him in the Legislature. Hawaii has a lost one of its true public servants. We wish his family well.
