Gary Player having so many grandkids that he has a qualifier for them to see who plays with him in the PNC is the most hilarious on brand thing I’ve heard in a while.
Took my oldest son up to The RSM to watch Åberg, Clanton and McCarty. He needed to be exposed to some proper golf, and watching Åberg and Clanton in Friday’s cold, windy conditions was that. This was my first time watching Clanton and I came away thoroughly impressed. Here’s why:
- He reminds me a bit of a young Morikawa when he first came out on TOUR (but with an extra 30 yards). Both made hay in the summer months by just flagging irons, making a ton of birdies and going low. They racked up gaudy approach stats while doing it.
Luke would rank second to Scottie Scheffler in SG: Approach if he’d played enough rounds this season to qualify for the TOUR’s statistical rankings. Luke also would lead the TOUR in greens hit (74.4%).
- But he’d also be 3rd in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee. How? He’s driving it as long as Wyndham Clark and as straight as Chez Reavie (literally).
Luke is averaging 314.1 yards off the tee, which would put him in the top 10 of driving distance, while hitting 68.4% of his fairways, a rate that would rank in the top 15 in accuracy.
His total driving (the sum of your ranking in driving distance and driving accuracy) would be 21. For context, the leader in that stat has a combined ranking of 84. Scottie Scheffler is 2nd at 86.
- The most impressive shot he hit all day may have been his drive on the par-5 14th, a low stinger fade that allowed him to access the right side of the split fairway (a place I’ve never seen anyone go because there’s OB right). It’s a shot that he uses quite often, and it comes in handy under pressure or on windy days like today.
He actually uses a driver that spins a little more than would be considered “optimal” so that he can hit that stinger. With too little spin, the stinger would fall out of the air and not carry far enough.
- While Luke predominantly plays a cut, he still hits a variety of shots. It showed with a tidy wedge game Friday. His birdies on the front nine all came from knocking wedge shots close (and then a tidy, short-sided up-and-down on the par-5 18th). His coach, Jeff Leishman, said distance control is an emphasis of their training. Good distance control comes from solid contact (can’t control your distance if you’re consistently mishitting it) and trajectory control.
Luke said he hit a 9-iron “about 5 feet off the ground” on one hole that caused Ludvig to turn and say, “That was crazy.”
Åberg had this to say about Clanton after the round: “It seems like he has all the tools. It seems like he’s playing very smart golf. I don’t see him making some mistakes that other guys do. I see him as a mature golfer.”
- One longtime caddie who’s been paired with him this year said this: “Kid can play. I was impressed. Has some shots in the arsenal. … I like that he has that down (lower) cut off the tee or can let it go up in the air.”
So basically he’s long, accurate and a good iron player. Can’t ask for much more.
- Clanton, who has 3 top-10s (and just one MC) in 7 TOUR starts this season, will enter the weekend of The RSM in fourth place. He’s third in greens hit this week, fifth in driving accuracy and seventh in driving distance.
This will be fun to watch.
Sam Bennett just spit on his club and wiped it down himself in case you forgot that a college golfer is in the final grouping on the weekend at The Masters.
"Being me is enough" is a good way forward in golf but an even better one in life. On Rory's self-belief and the ever-present temptation to be more than we can reasonably be.

The fact that Rory was crying 3 weeks ago at the Ryder Cup (disappointed about how he was playing) and then came back this week to win really speaks to
1. How weird golf is
2. The amount of hard work he is putting in behind the scenes
The most gifted player of the post-Tiger era tried to be someone he isn’t. This sport does twisted things to the psyche. But Rory McIlroy has finally realized that Rory McIlroy is more than enough. We all should, too.
