Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), a tick-borne illness caused by a virus, remains a significant concern in the Malenadu regions of Karnataka and is spreading to neighbouring states along the Western Ghats.

The disease has a fatality rate estimated between 3% to 15%, as against dengue's 2.6% fatality. The disease outbreak tends to peak during the summer season, disappearing with the onset of monsoons.

This year, deficient rainfall and intense heat in southern states, conditions conducive to the proliferation of ticks, provides additional risks of a KFD outbreak.

Until now the virus causing KFD has remained relatively undisturbed, likely circulating within the Malenadu forests from an earlier period. What has changed?
