香港の大埔は、私が20年以上暮らしてきた場所です。自分の故郷でこのように深刻な火災が起きたことに、驚き、悲しみ、怒りが入り混じり、言葉を失っています。

多くの日本の方々が竹の足場に驚いているのを見ました。私は専門家ではありませんが、香港人としての考えをここで少しシェアしたいと思います。

物心ついた頃から、竹の足場は香港では「当たり前」の存在でした。香港では、ほとんどの建物が竹の足場で建てられています。

もちろん、竹製と金属製の足場にはそれぞれメリット・デメリットがあると思います。しかし、今回の火災は、足場の素材そのものよりも、建設会社が経費を抑えるために燃えやすい発泡スチロールなどの資材を使用したこ���によって火勢が急速に広がったことが、大きな要因だと指摘されています。現場の火災警報器が鳴らなかったことも、死傷者が多く出た理由の一つです。火元がどこにあったのかについては、今はまだ調査中です。

日本の皆さんが竹の足場に驚かれるのは理解できます。まだ全容は分かっていませんが、現在香港での議論では、一部業者の強欲さ、そしてその背後にある利益が関係していると考えられています。皆さんもご理解いただければと思います。
