Sometimes the criticism of President Ruto is too loud not because he’s the worst president Kenya has ever had, but simply because he’s not from the favourite tribe. Most of the things he’s criticised for happened even worse under previous regimes. That’s why police brutality in Kibaki’s time is blamed on Internal Security ministers. You’ll hear them blaming CS Matiang’i for the Yala massacre, the butchering of NASA supporters, and the Baby Pendo case,but they don’t blame the president then, Uhuru. In this regime the goalposts have been shifted: police brutality is blamed on the president, not the CS Interior or the IG. They’ll say when the River Yala bodies happened Ruto was Deputy President, but they won’t admit that when Gen Z police brutality happened, Rigathi Gachagua was Deputy President.
