Speaking at a Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation seminar on migration, the Standard Bank CEO says his bank operates in 20 African countries. It earned R49 billion last year, with about 40% of that coming from outside SA.

So, this South African man is renting a property from a South African landlady. He is not paying his rent, and the landlady is evicting him for exactly that reason; he is not paying.

The same landlady also rents properties to foreign nationals. Yet this tenant now wants to run to Jacinda and her Afrophobe crowd to complain that the landlady is evicting him while renting some of her other properties to foreign nationals.

Do you see what is wrong with this?

It creates a culture of entitlement where people begin to believe that housing should be given to them for free, and that foreign nationals, even when they pay their rent on time, should somehow come second to South Africans who are not meeting their own rental obligations.

In effect, he is arguing that his South African citizenship entitles him to occupy a property rent-free while a foreign national who honours their lease should be denied accommodation simply because they are not South African.

This is the kind of irrational hostility that people like Jacinda have helped to cultivate. It encourages the dangerous belief that a law-abiding foreign national who pays their rent should be removed from a property to make way for someone who doesn’t pay.

I do not believe that any reasonable person would support such irrational thinking. In fact, I doubt that even Jacinda and those who cheer her on would willingly give up their own properties to someone who doesn’t pay rent simply because that person is South African.

If they had to choose between a tenant who pays every month and one who does not, the answer would be obvious.
This is not about nationality. It is about responsibility, contracts and basic fairness.

The notion that “because I am South African, I deserve to live rent-free while foreign nationals who pay their way should be excluded” is not patriotism. It is sickening entitlement.

That mentality is destructive, and it needs to be challenged before it becomes normal. A functioning society cannot be built on the expectation that citizenship exempts people from their responsibilities while punishing those who meet theirs.

A bit tone-deaf to the concerns of people who can’t see the tangible economic progress you speak of. A whole lot of gaslighting going on here, respectfully.

Why not be a bridge between the citizens and the office you serve by mediating the grievances of the people, if you truly act in Zimbabwe’s best interests?

Listen more. It does a lot of good. Some of the concerns people are crying out about may be relatively small and straightforward to address. Taking the time to hear them could build trust and make it much easier to achieve the agenda you’ve asked Zimbabweans to support over the next seven years.
