There are some moments in public life which touch you very deeply. Today is one such moment for me.
Assam’s Maternal Mortality Rate has come down to 84. For the first time in our history, Assam is now below the national average of 88.
When I took over the Health Department in 2006, our MMR was 480. At that time, this journey looked almost impossible. But thousands of doctors, nurses, ASHA workers, health officials and frontline workers across Assam kept working silently, tirelessly and with compassion year after year.
This achievement belongs to them.
Behind this number are countless mothers who returned safely home to their families. Behind this success are years of sacrifice, sleepless nights and an unwavering commitment to save lives.
Assam has achieved something truly historic today. What once seemed impossible has become reality through collective effort and the blessings of the people of Assam.
I bow with gratitude to every health worker who made this possible.

NEWS | New plant species discovered in #ManasNationalPark named after singer #ZubeenGarg
A new species of flowering plant discovered in Assam’s Manas landscape has been named Osbeckia zubeengargiana in honour of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
The species was identified by a team of researchers including Barnali Das (Department of Botany, Gauhati University; also associated with Pragjyotish College), Namita Nath (Professor, Botany, Gauhati University), Prashob Pulpra (NSS College, Kerala) and the findings were formally published on March 13, 2026 in the international botanical journal Phytotaxa. The plant belongs to the Melastomataceae family, a group known for its diverse flowering shrubs found across tropical and subtropical regions.
The new plant species was discovered in the grassland ecosystem of Manas National Park in Assam. The park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is globally recognised for its rich biodiversity and unique ecological landscape that supports a wide range of flora and fauna.
Osbeckia zubeengargiana is a perennial shrub that grows naturally in open grassland habitats within the Manas region. The plant is characterised by its delicate purple to pinkish flowers, typical of many species within the Osbeckia genus. The shrub thrives in moist soil conditions and blooms seasonally, adding to the floral diversity of the grassland ecosystem.

Judge field to Khanapara- 10 mts: If Commerce traffic point is removed & all cuts r closed-allowing vehicles to use underpasses of flyovers-traffic could move freely without a single intersection. Old Chandmari flyover has good underpass that remains unused. @DGPAssamPolice 1/2
Sepon becomes the first of the ‘big ones’ to refrain from extravagant celebrations this year following Zubeen Garg’s demise. They will only observe the traditional rituals and there won’t be any musical night.
