After the closure of the American Bar Association in The Gambia, I began a new chapter in June as a UN Volunteer. On August 1st, UNDP celebrated 60 years of impact, and I was honored to be part of this milestone. #UNDP@60

As our team led by @MB_Sowe continues to build capacity with victims on the Special Accountability Mechanism process and the work of the Victims Reparations Commission, we are currently in #BrikamaBa.

Here are some powerful reflections from the victims:

‘Reparations are meant for victims but victims are dying. What is the purpose of reparations if they don’t reach us in time?”

‘It’s painful to see foreign countries leading the push for justice in The Gambia, while our own government remains slow and unresponsive.”

‘The sale of Jammeh’s assets adds to our pain. Those funds should have been used to compensate the victims.”

“The information you shared with us today has been truly enlightening and valuable.”

Today, our team visited #Kerrmot Ali to engage with victims in an educative session focused on the post-TRRC process, particularly on accountability mechanisms and the role of the Reparations Commission. The session provided a platform for community members to share their lived experiences and frustrations.

Below are key highlights from the discussion:

The police stations here and in Njau continue to violate our basic human rights. In cases of conflict, decisions are consistently biased against us, often because of our religious identity.”

When we try to cross into the Gambian side, we face immediate arrest by the police, harassment, or discrimination from community members many of whom are not even Gambian citizens.”

None of us born after 2009 have birth certificates. When we approach the Alkalo for help, he denies our citizenship and refuses to provide any supporting documents.”

We face constant discrimination and risk of arrest when trying to travel. Our right to freedom of movement has effectively been taken from us. We are exhausted and frustrated.”

We have waited too long. The systematic injustice against us continues unchecked. We call on the government to respect the High Court’s ruling and implement the TRRC’s recommendations without further delay.” @PostTRRC_Gambia @NHRCGambia
