Yesterday, I delivered my statement in the Senate Chamber in Michif, the language of the Metis Nation.

I hope this historic occasion will show Michif children across the Homeland that there is a place for them in every decision-making space, even the Senate of Canada.

Each year, Métis citizens, families, Elders, youth, and friends come together to celebrate our culture, honour our history, and strengthen the ties that connect us.

First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth voices are an important part of our work in the Senate.

The Senate Committee on Indigenous Peoples is inviting Indigenous youth aged 18 to 35 to participate in Voices of Youth Indigenous Leaders.

This initiative provides an opportunity for youth to share their ideas, experiences and perspectives directly with senators through a committee process. Submissions — written or creative — help inform the committee’s work and contribute to broader discussions.

Today we recognize Senator Yvonne Boyer, a Métis leader whose work has advanced Indigenous health, human rights, and reconciliation across Canada. She was appointed on International Women’s Day in 2018.

Yesterday in the Senate Chamber, I paid tribute to a dear friend and leader, Gregory Brass.

This statement was made especially meaningful with the attendance of his daughter, the Honourable Judge Michelle R. Brass joining us in the gallery.

Today Bill S228 received Royal Assent & is now law across Canada; making sterilizing someone against their will an aggravated assault in the Criminal Code.
