What does respectful dialogue look like in a polarized world?
Graduate students from the @uOttawa joined senators @SenatorSalma, @SenBoehm, @BaltejSDhillon and Kim Pate in the Senate Chamber for a discussion on political polarization and the role of democratic institutions, such as the Senate, in fostering social cohesion.
The conversation explored how respectful dialogue can help bridge differences and strengthen democracy.

My heart is with Jusi Pudlayat’s loved ones and the entire Ivujivik community as they mourn an unimaginable loss. His family deserves clear answers about what happened. Every child, no matter how remote their community, deserves to have their pain heard and taken seriously.

Productive discussion with @TorontoPolice on the evolving landscape of financial crime and the real impact it has on individuals, families and communities. Grateful for the candid conversation on what law enforcement is seeing on the ground, where the gaps remain, and how we can work together to better protect Canadians.
Today, we celebrate Pakistan’s independence and the generations who have carried its spirit across borders and through time. To Pakistani communities here in Canada and around the world, may this day be filled with pride, reflection and hope for the future. Happy Pakistan Independence Day! 🇵🇰
It was a privilege to join the Afghan Canadian Youth Council in BC and celebrate a community whose story is defined by resilience, courage and hope. The future of Canada is being shaped every day by young people who choose to lead and lift others up. I look forward to seeing the accomplishments of this next generation.
Shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Todd Lewis. He dedicated much of his public life to advocating for Saskatchewan’s agricultural sector. His loss will be felt by many. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, loved ones, and everyone mourning his passing.
Last night, the NCCM team stood alongside members of Winnipeg's Rahma Islamic Centre community after the facility was attacked by individuals who shot at it from a car before slashing at its walls with a blunt object.
The windows have been left with bullet holes, while the walls have been marked up as well. Community members were gathered inside as the incident unfolded.
It was another shocking incident that fits a pattern of growing violent Islamophobia across Canada, where similar incidents have been reported on a literal daily basis.
We have reached a crisis moment in Canada. We are already the G-7 leader when it comes to Islamophobia motivated murders. We know what unchecked anti-Muslim hate looks like.
Such a moment calls for a strong National Strategy on Combatting Islamophobia.
Now is the time for all elected officials to have a serious conversation about building a new path forward. We have no time to lose.
Honoured to have been a panellist and guest speaker at the Women2Women International Leadership Program at the Senate of Canada. It is always inspiring to engage with a young generation of women leaders who are already making a difference today.
It is deeply disturbing to see Islamophobic incidents continue to surface across our communities. Hate is not something we should grow accustomed to. Every Canadian deserves to live in peace.

Heartbreaking beyond words. I keep thinking about the people on those boats. They were people who already lost so much: home, family, a sense of safety. They climbed onto those boats believing there might be life on the other side. How tragic that they met the opposite.

Canada’s story has always been shaped by many voices: different backgrounds, different perspectives, united by a shared commitment to build something greater than ourselves. May we continue building a Canada worthy of the hopes people bring to it every day. 🇨🇦 Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦
