Have you ever wondered what it would be like to raise chickens? More than 70 participants joined Mr. KC Cahall, Seneca Valley Outdoor Education teacher, to learn more about what it takes to start a backyard flock. Students, along with their families, had the opportunity to meet Haine Elementary and Middle School’s feathered friends while learning how this initiative benefits students.
“The benefits of chickens at Haine go well beyond the science classroom,” said Mr. Cahall. “The chickens have created engaging opportunities for students to develop skills related to descriptive writing and language development.”
Students are also gaining math skills by tracking food waste diverted from landfills as they collect and provide fresh fruit and vegetable scraps to the chickens, graph egg production and perform cost analyses comparing the cost of feed with egg sales.
Additionally, caring for chickens gives students the opportunity to practice responsibility, empathy, patience and communication skills.
Thank you, Mr. Cahall, for bringing learning to life and proving that sometimes, the greatest classrooms have feathers!

Seneca Valley’s Jazz Ensemble I, the District’s premier jazz ensemble, has been selected to perform as a guest ensemble at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Annual Conference April 14-17, 2027. The annual conference is one of Pennsylvania’s largest gatherings of music educators and student musicians and is held in conjunction with the PMEA All-State Student Festival.
The selection was determined through a competitive audition process and places Seneca Valley among a select group of instrumental and vocal ensembles chosen to showcase excellence in music education and performance.
“This is an extraordinary honor for our students and our music program,” said Varden Armstrong, faculty director of the ensemble. “The opportunity to perform before hundreds of music educators, administrators and student musicians from across Pennsylvania is both a recognition of our students’ accomplishments and a testament to their dedication, talent and hard work.”
The upcoming appearance will mark only the third time in school history that a Seneca Valley Jazz Ensemble has been selected to perform at the PMEA Annual Conference. The ensemble previously performed at the 2004 and 2014 conferences.
“This recognition is the result of countless hours of practice, rehearsals and performances, as well as the unwavering support of our families and performing arts faculty,” Armstrong said. “For many of these students, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we are incredibly proud to represent Seneca Valley on the state stage.”
Sixth grade students in Haine Middle School’s What I Need (WIN) enrichment classes recently brought their reading to life with a friendly tea party and Academic Bowl! Students read the novel “A View from Saturday,” in which characters build a friendship, regularly meeting for tea while preparing for the state Academic Bowl. Inspired by the story, students embraced themes of teamwork, inclusion and meaningful conversation throughout their own event.

We are pleased to continue the tradition of inviting elementary students from Seneca Valley’s K-6 schools to lead the members of the School Board and public in saying “The Pledge of Allegiance” during school board meetings.
For the Oct. 5 work session meeting, we were joined by Connoquenessing Valley Elementary third grader Bennett Frazier. He loves to play soccer, basketball and board games; collect Pokémon cards; build Legos; cheer on the Ohio State Buckeyes and travel with his family. Above all, he enjoys the game of chess! After learning the game from his uncle, Bennett shared that he fell in love with the strategy and back-and-forth of the game. When he grows up, he wants to be a professional soccer player and an engineer!
Great job, Bennett, we enjoyed having you join us for #SVILedthePledge!
Imagine bringing together over 100 people who all share the same passion…playing the clarinet. On Saturday, August 22, that is exactly what happened at the annual Steel City Clarinet Day (SCCD) which was held this year at Shaler Area Middle School. Dr. Amanda Morrison, Event Director and Professor of Clarinet at Slippery Rock University (SRU), sponsors this event each year which is open to clarinet players of all ages, from middle school through adult professionals. Each year Dr. Morrison brings in guest artists and performers along with local vendors, all in an effort to provide exciting learning opportunities and experiences for clarinet players of all ages.
A highlight of clarinet day is the opportunity to perform in an Advanced Clarinet Choir that is made up of high school and college students as well as adult amateur and professional players. This year, two SV Instrumental students Emma Galle and Madison Brown participated in the advanced clarinet choir.
Seneca Valley Instrumental teacher Sara Snyder was also involved in the Clarinet Day as one of the directors for the Intermediate Clarinet Choir. In addition to conducting the closing concert, Mrs. Snyder participated in a clinic with the younger students on fundamentals of clarinet playing that they could use as they begin the new school year.
This year, one Seneca Valley alumni was part of the SCCD event as well. Paityn Armstrong (SV Class of ‘24) is a clarinet major at Slippery Rock University and a member of Dr. Morrison’s Studio. Paityn was involved in many aspects of the day, including performing in the final concert with the Advanced Clarinet Choir.
It’s World Smile Day, and we may be biased, but our SV students and staff have some of the brightest smiles around!
This #FlashbackFriday, enjoy some photos that are sure to make you smile!

Mushroom expert Josh Mowris recently joined Seneca Valley’s Outdoor Education Program for an exploratory mushroom walk on the secondary campus. The day included a professional development session for staff, followed by a family program for 76 students and their families. Despite the rain, students and staff ventured outside to discover and identify countless fungi, plants and tree species. It was an event filled with exploration, discovery and plenty of wonder about the incredible natural world right here on our campus!

As we wrap up National Arts in Education Week, we want to give a shoutout to our SV Fine and Performing Arts! Today, and every day, we celebrate the arts and recognize the impact art, in its many forms, has on education. At Seneca Valley, we take pride in the ways students express themselves artistically (through dance, art, design, music, etc.) and seeing them excel in these areas.
Thank you to our wonderful teachers who make the fine and performing arts program possible.

Last week, SV Raider Roast opened its window for business!
Located in the Senior High School, Raider Roast is operated by SV staff and student workers in the Vocational Readiness class. Students take on roles as cashiers, prep workers and baristas while learning workplace skills, including following food safety guidelines and working as part of a team. This year, student workers are supported by SV Transition Specialist Ms. Liz Wimer and students in the College in High School (CHS) Introduction to Special Education class.
The shop has proven to be a favorite on the secondary campus and students enjoy working together in an inclusive environment.
“Being part of Raider Roast has been one of the most fulfilling experiences for me,” said Ainsley Wheland, a senior CHS Intro to Special Education student. “Getting to help the students learn and grow while learning from them myself is something that I’ll always be grateful for.”
“I enjoy seeing the growth in the students and their confidence blooming! They are always a light in my day,” added senior Jordan Lauer. “It’s extra special for me because I get to work with my brother in the coffee shop!”
Raider Roast student workers, like Jordan’s brother Max, enjoy making new menu items and meeting new friends!
“I work with friends and make drinks for friends,” said Joel Speicher, a Raider Roast employee in the Vocational Readiness class. “I like the boba!”
Gabe Hort, a senior Raider Roast employee, agreed that meeting new people and making drinks for them is his favorite part of the program!
We look forward to another school year of smiles, new friends and fresh brewed beverages!
