It’s only thanks to the wisdom and generosity of past generations that today we have an $80 billion+ Permanent Fund. I am proud of my colleagues for exercising that same foresight for the benefit of our kids, grandkids, and Alaskans not yet born.
He took great care of his family, his village, and Alaskans across the state. My condolences to the Kookesh family and all of Albert’s friends near and far.
Albert Kookesh was not only an advocate for the region, he was a statewide leader and an excellent family man. He will be greatly missed, within his family and beyond that, throughout the state and Southeast Alaska.
Last year, #akleg gave up our authority to appropriate relief money so @GovDunleavy could do it in a fast, streamlined manner since we did not know how the pandemic would affect us. This time, we will appropriate. Read more about the new federal relief $: https://t.co/1OxUExN21h
Last week, I traveled to Ketchikan, Hyder, and Metlakatla with @GovDunleavy, where we met with local leaders and unveiled the new plan for 18-month funding for the ferries. See more: https://t.co/YBev761SOK #akleg@AKSenMajority
This plan is an important step in stabilizing the Alaska Marine Highway System. An 18-month budget allows for a schedule from July 1 to the end of 2022. Earlier release of schedules boost sales and ridership. https://t.co/0rOTMAwsCY #akleg
Final stop of the day - Metlakatla. I had a fantastic time connecting with local leaders & elders. Great people & a great community!

I met with Mayor Gina McKay of Stewart, B.C., Canada, while in Hyder. She joined us on the #Alaska side of the border. We talked about the importance of reopening the border so families in Hyder & Stewart can see each other.

Today I’m visiting local leaders in Ketchikan, Saxman, Hyder and Metlakatla. I enjoyed breakfast this morning at The Landing with some folks from Ketchikan.

This project has been in the works for over 20 years. It might have fallen through the cracks if it were not for the diligent teamwork by @SenDanSullivan, NOAA, and my former chief of staff, Randy Ruaro, who currently serves as Governor Mike Dunleavy’s chief of staff.
There’s no reason for Alaska to be treated like a territory or a third-world country and everything based out of Washington State. Ships that operate in Alaska should be homeported in Alaska, where they belong. #akleg

I’m happy that our congressional delegation was able to make this happen. I want to especially thank @SenDanSullivan for helping secure this project that will help rebuild the NOAA dock in Ketchikan so that the NOAA Ship Fairweather can be permanently based there.
@NOAA The $18.7 million @NOAA contract is exciting news for Ketchikan & Southeast, but it’s just one critical piece of a larger, historic build-up of our @USCG and NOAA vessels and assets in Alaska, a build-up that I fully intend to continue.
After years of work, pressure & close coordination w/ our partners in Southeast, particularly Senator Bert Stedman and Mayor Rodney Dial, we have finally secured the federal funding required to revamp Ketchikan’s dock facilities.

NOAA has announced an $18.7 million contract to ‘revitalize’ its port facility in Ketchikan, including ‘the construction of a new office building, large floating pier, steel access trestle, and updated power and water utility systems for servicing visiting ships.’
On Monday, I flew to Petersburg on the inaugural flight with Alaska Seaplanes. I'm happy to see enhancements to transportation options in Southeast Alaska. https://t.co/Ryok21iYlX
