Ministry of Agriculture Conducts Mid-Year Review of Regional Activities

The Public Relations Office of the Ministry of Agriculture reported that the Ministry conducted a meeting on 16 July to assess the implementation of regional work plans during the first half of 2026, as well as the progress of the Comprehensive Small and Productive Farm Plot program.

During the assessment meeting, comprehensive reports were presented by all six regions of the country, covering a wide range of activities, including soil and water conservation, the construction of water reservoirs, river diversion works, the status of crops and the rainy season, the multiplication and distribution of improved seed, the production of organic fertilizer, the development of vegetable and fruit production, crop and livestock health, beekeeping, the distribution of chickens and supply of eggs, as well as the implementation of the Comprehensive Small and Productive Farm Plot program and other related activities.

According to assessments conducted up to the end of June 2026, of the 2,003 villages identified as having the potential to implement the Comprehensive Small and Productive Farm Plot program, 1,672 villages, or more than 83%, have successfully implemented it in at least one household, while many villages had extended the program to more than one household.

Following extensive discussions on the reports presented, the participants made a number of recommendations. These included strengthening the monitoring of the distribution and impact of improved seed, assessing the performance and impact of distributed chickens, and enhancing the promotion and practical application of organic fertilizers, along with several other important recommendations and observations.

In his closing remarks, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, reaffirmed that the Ministry is committed to achieving its strategic vision of “Safe and Nutritious Food for Everyone, Everywhere.” He emphasized that the full implementation of the Comprehensive Small and Productive Farm Plot program remains one of the Ministry’s leading strategies for achieving this objective.

The Minister noted that although the progress achieved so far was encouraging, agricultural experts should continue working with greater commitment until the program is fully implemented by every household in every village. He further encouraged frontline extension workers to facilitate practical learning and promote wider adoption of the program.

Minister Arefaine also stressed that soil and water conservation forms the foundation of all agricultural development. He therefore called for the preparation of well-defined action plans and the establishment of close monitoring mechanisms to ensure the effective implementation of soil and water conservation activities.

The mid-year review meeting was attended by senior officials and experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, together with heads of regional agriculture and land departments and technical experts from all six regions of the country. #Eritrea

Eritrea's internationally recognized colonial boundaries were defined through the 1900, 1902, and 1908 treaties between Italy and Ethiopia, decades before Ethiopia's current internationally recognized borders were finalized.

𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧-𝟮: Italy ruled Eritrea as a colony from 1890 to 1941, followed by British Military Administration until 1952. During most of that period, Ethiopia's principal maritime outlet was through #Djibouti, not the ports of Massawa or Assab.

𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧-𝟯: Following the establishment of the Eritrea-Ethiopia federation in 1952, and especially after Ethiopia dissolved the federation and «annexed» Eritrea in 1962, Ethiopia gained direct control of the Eritrean ports of #Massawa and #Assab. It retained access to those ports until Eritrea achieved de facto independence in 1991 and internationally recognized independence in 1993.

Since Eritrea became an independent sovereign state, #Ethiopia has once again been landlocked. In practical terms, Ethiopia's direct access to the Red Sea existed only during the period when Eritrea was under Ethiopian control. That access ended when Eritrea regained its independence.

These historical facts are well documented. Ignoring them or misrepresenting them does not change the historical record.

ETHIOPIA — ⚠️ The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF-OLA) dismisses PM Abiy Ahmed's proposed "𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲" and constitutional reform process as a one-sided political exercise rather than a genuine effort to address Ethiopia's crises.

The group argues that the process lacks meaningful participation from opposition forces and independent voices, contending that any outcomes would ultimately remain under the control of the prime minister rather than reflecting a broad national consensus.

Foreign Minister Osman Saleh met in Cairo today his Egyptian counterpart, FM Dr. Badr Abdelatty, for extensive talks on the consolidation of the strategic and historical ties of partnership that exist between the two countries.

The two Foreign Ministers discussed in greater depth current developments in the Horn of Africa and the coordination of the respective positions of both countries on matters of mutual interest.

The Foreign Ministers recalled the meeting between the two Heads of State held in Cairo last month as well as previous exchanges of Ministerial visits between the two countries.

In this regard, Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and his Egyptian counterpart noted that conducive groundwork has indeed been accomplished to elevate the bilateral ties of friendship and cooperation to a new and higher level and thereby augment the benefits and interests of both peoples.

The July 2026 graduation ceremonies across #Eritrea|s higher education institutions reflect the country’s continued investment in human capital development and the expansion of opportunities in science, technology, engineering, agriculture, business, and social sciences.

At the College of Business and Social Sciences, 1,018 graduates received first degrees and diplomas in fields including business management, public administration, accounting, economics, law, languages, and social sciences, with women representing 47 percent of graduates. The Mai Nefhi College of Science conferred BSc degrees to 300 graduates, with women accounting for 49 percent, in disciplines including biology, chemistry, earth sciences, mathematics, physics, and statistics.

The Hamelmalo College of Agriculture graduated 375 students, including veterinary doctors, BSc graduates, and diploma holders, in areas essential to food security and sustainable development, including animal sciences, plant sciences, horticulture, food technology, plant protection, and environmental protection.

The Mai Nefhi College of Engineering and Technology conferred first degrees and diplomas to 297 graduates in engineering and technical fields such as civil, mechanical, marine, mining, agricultural, chemical, electrical, computer science, automotive technology, construction, networking, and surveying.

Together, these institutions produced 1,990 graduates in July alone, representing #Eritrea|s continued efforts to develop a skilled workforce capable of advancing national priorities in #agriculture, #industry, #infrastructure, #energy, #mining, #digitaltransformation, #environmentalmanagement, and #publicadministration.

The growing participation of women, particularly in science and business-related disciplines, also demonstrates progress toward greater #gender inclusion in higher education. At the same time, the expansion of technical and vocational programmes ensures that graduates acquire practical skills aligned with the country’s development needs.

Mai Nefhi College of Engineering and Technology has Conferred 1st Degrees and Diplomas to 297 Graduates - 25% of whom are female - in its 19th Commencement today.

First Degree courses include: Agricultural, Chemical, Civil, Marine, Mechanical, and Mining Engineering respectively. Computer Science and Engineering; Electrical and Electronics Engineering are additional Faculties.

The Diploma courses consist of: Automotive Technology; Computer Application; Computer Hardware & Networking; Construction Technology; Electrical Technology; Mining Technology; Refrigeration & Air Conditioning; and, Surveying and Drafting.
