At the Kennedy Center, in front of an audience that included officials from the FDA and CDC, @AaronSiriSG laid out exactly why vaccines are the only product in America a family can't sue over, even if the manufacturer could have made it safer.

It goes back to 1986. The three childhood vaccines that existed at the time caused so much harm that every manufacturer was going out of business or dropping the product. Instead of forcing a safer product the way every other industry in history has been forced to, Congress gave vaccine makers permanent immunity from injury and death claims.

In exchange, it created a legal requirement for HHS to issue a report to Congress every two years on how it was making vaccines safer. That report has never once been submitted.

Siri walked through the actual FDA licensure documents for the vaccines given to infants in their first six months of life. The Hepatitis B vaccine, Recombivax HB, was licensed based on a trial that monitored 147 children for five days after each dose, with no placebo control group.

Prevnar 7 had no placebo either, its control was another experimental vaccine still in trials. Prevnar 13 was later tested against Prevnar 7, even though Prevnar 7 itself had never been proven safe against a placebo. Every routine childhood vaccine on the CDC schedule traces back the same way: never tested against a true placebo, ever.

On autism specifically, Siri didn't argue causation. He showed what happened when @ICANDecide sued CDC for the studies it claims prove vaccines don't cause autism. The agency produced 20 citations. Nineteen had nothing to do with the vaccines in question. The twentieth was a 2012 report that found exactly one study linking the pertussis vaccine to autism, and that study found an association, which the report then excluded on a technicality.

In a deposition, one of the country's leading vaccine textbook authors testified under oath that she had no study showing several of these vaccines don't cause autism, for any of them, individually.

Siri also picked apart the CDC's own headline claim that vaccines prevented 1.1 million deaths since 1994. For diphtheria alone, the claim credits 25,000 lives saved a year, in a year where the total number of diphtheria deaths in the entire country was 634.
