Humans are not the only living being who appreciate surfing waves: dolphins do love surfing the world's finest breaks too and they've been doing it for 11 million years.

Dr. Lori Marino joins Dave Schlom of North State Public Radio to discuss the human bias toward other species and the remarkable cognitive abilities of dolphins and whales. Using Dr. Marino’s recent SETI Institute Drake Award as a springboard, they explore our complicated relationship to intelligence in the animal world, how AI might help decode cetacean communication and why we need to expand our understanding of intelligence beyond humans.
Healthy oceans are vital to our environment, economy, and communities across the country.
Through our new nature strategy we’re taking action to conserve 30% of our marine and coastal waters by 2030 — like in the new Mia-yaltwa Ha'lidzogm hoon National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, where we’re protecting thousands of kilometres of coastal water in BC.
#WorldOceansDay
I’m proud to announce on World Ocean Day that Canada will host the 12th Our Ocean Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in spring 2027.
Halifax 2027 is where Canada shows what ocean leadership looks like, and where the world gets to work.

This World Environment Day, as we appreciate the forests, oceans, mountains, rivers, and wildlife that sustain us, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting them. Through Canada’s Strategy to Protect Nature, we’re advancing efforts to protect our lands, waters, and wildlife.
A gentle giant cruising right by the shoreline. 🌊 It’s hard to comprehend the pure scale of a blue whale until you see it juxtaposed against the rocks like this. Nature at its most majestic.
A rare masterpiece of nature. 🐋🤍 Watch this Southern right whale mother bond with her rare white "brindle" calf. Only about 4% of these calves are born with this unique coloration, making this drone footage an absolute treasure to see. 🌊
Witnessing a masterclass in dolphin intelligence. This bottlenose dolphin uses a technique called mud-ring feeding, kicking up a circle of plume to trap fish before snatching them as they leap out of the water!
It is thought that over two million species may call oceans home! 🦑🐠🐬
The ocean's biodiversity is breathtaking, and each species plays a role in keeping our oceans healthy. This #BiodiversityDay, join Oceana to protect life beneath the waves: https://t.co/5KrHwutcKE
Today, we signed a historic agreement to protect thousands of kilometres of coastal waters adjacent to the Great Bear Rainforest with Wuikinuxv, Nuxalk, Kitasoo Xai'xais, Heiltsuk, Gitxaała, and Gitga’at Nations, and the province of British Columbia.
This is the first of up to ten new national marine conservation areas we are establishing through our new nature strategy — helping conserve biodiversity on BC’s Central Coast for generations to come, and contributing to our goal of conserving 30 per cent of marine and coastal waters by 2030.
Great to see the bears of Marineland find a bright future at a Colorado sanctuary, with their own evergreen forest. All Our Relations in the natural world deserve respect and protection.
Happy 100th birthday to the voice of nature, Sir David Attenborough — whose work has helped generations discover and learn about the amazing natural world around us.
His work reminds us how humans, animals, and ecosystems are connected, and we all have a duty to protect it.
