Erfan Mirzaei’s lifeless body was returned to his family on September 6, with no official cause of death given. He was identified after the January protests and later arrested, reportedly after security forces found protest videos on his phone. He was subjected to severe beatings and torture in detention. Relatives say they saw fractures to his hands, legs and pelvis when they received his body.

IranWire reports that he was secretly executed. His family was not informed beforehand and only learned of his death afterward.

This is nothing new for the IR. In 2026, Amnesty reported new cases of beatings, simulated hangings, suspension, prolonged solitary confinement, denial of food and medical care, and suspicious deaths in custody.
