South Africa has officially launched its first-ever National Science Month, marking a major milestone in promoting science, technology, and innovation across the country. The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) inaugurated the month-long campaign on 4 July 2026 at the Vaal University of Technology in Sebokeng, Gauteng. Under the theme "Science, Technology and Innovation Are for Everyone," the initiative aims to inspire young people to pursue STEM careers, improve scientific literacy, celebrate South African scientific achievements, and integrate Indigenous Knowledge Systems with modern innovation. Led by Minister Prof. Blade Nzimande and Deputy Minister Dr. Nomalungelo Gina, the campaign also supports regional industrialisation during South Africa's interim chairship of the SADC. On Saturday, 4 July 2026, #TeamCSIR showcased a range of cutting-edge technologies at the launch of National Science Month 2026 at the Vaal University of Technology. This year’s #NationalScienceMonth2026 is held under the theme, “Science, technology and innovation for everyone”.
NSM, an initiative of the @dstigovza, is designed to celebrate science and its significant contributions to society.
The CSIR featured innovations at the launch included Television White Space deployment, along with complementary projects that provide affordable broadband connectivity to rural and township communities in South Africa. Other technologies that were on display included additive manufacturing and atomiser, microfluidics and lab-on-chip (LOC) devices and prototypes, indigenous knowledge with scientific research to support the sustainable use and value addition of medicinal plants and 5G network that supports network slicing.
