Life after university feels different when you come from a poor background. There are no safety nets or easy paths, just the weight of pressure, responsibilities, and the relentless grind to create opportunities from scratch. Yet, we persist, because giving up has never been an option.
Signs You’re Overfeeding or Underfeeding Goats
One of the biggest challenges in goat farming is finding the right feeding balance. When goats are not fed properly, their health, growth, reproduction, and milk production are affected. Observing their body condition and behavior can help you know if they are getting too much or too little feed.
When goats are overfed, especially on grains and concentrates, they start gaining excess weight. You may notice fat deposits around the tail head, ribs, and brisket. They often become less active because of the extra weight, and in many cases they experience bloating or diarrhea due to digestive imbalance. Overfeeding pregnant does can lead to metabolic disorders like pregnancy toxemia, making kidding difficult and risky. Another subtle sign is wasted feed in the trough, meaning they are given more than they can finish.
On the other hand, underfeeding goats is just as harmful. Goats lacking adequate nutrition become visibly thin and weak. Their ribs and spine start to show, and their sides appear sunken. Their coat turns dull, dry, and rough, sometimes shedding when it's not seasonal shedding time. Does that are producing milk will show a sharp drop in milk output because their bodies cannot support production without proper energy and nutrients. Kids grow slowly, appear weak, and may struggle to keep up with others. Underfed goats also appear restless and constantly search for food or chew anything they find, showing hunger and nutritional stress.
The key to healthy goats is balancing roughage such as grass, browse, and hay with the right amount of concentrates. Clean drinking water and free-choice mineral supplements are equally important. Feeding should always be adjusted based on the goat’s age, production stage, and body condition. Milking does, kids, and pregnant goats need higher nutrition than mature non-lactating animals. It’s always better to feed gradually and observe than to make sudden large changes.
A well-designed feeding program not only prevents malnutrition and overfeeding problems but also ensures strong immunity, healthy growth, and high productivity in your herd. Successful goat keeping begins with understanding their nutritional needs and monitoring their body condition regularly.
