Mara Elephant Project has a very special #FridayswithFred for you today. Meet Peter Blackwell, a Kenyan artist that brings to life the wildlife and landscapes he portrays. His most recent subject? Mara Tusker Fred.

While undertaking a residency at @SerianCamp, Peter spent a considerable amount of time with Fred in the field, and the bull elephant seemed to understand he was sitting for a portrait created by a talented artist. Virtually self-taught in fine art, Peter built a reputation as a watercolor artist specializing in birds and gained acclaim for his ability to bring to life his subjects on canvas with incredible character interpretations and distinctive details.

One of his latest collections features his arresting wildlife subjects on detailed maps; appearing to the viewer as if the wildlife and landscape are inseparable. They are a true visual representation of how these mapped landscapes and the wildlife that call them home are one and the same.

If you’re anxiously awaiting the final portrait of Fred like us, all will be revealed in the new year, and you may even have a chance to bring it home and support MEP’s elephant conservation work.

A staff member from @Seriancamp spotted an elephant calf limping and immediately contacted MEP to investigate. The LTM team searched for the elephant that same day and found her with her mom, a MEP identified elephant, individual 186, and confirmed the injury.

Highlights..
The pleasures of a slowed down safari. We spent a week with the Alex Walker Serian team in Mara North on this 18 night adventure. There was no rushing around for sightings, we had a full day to observe the Serian females and their cubs. Such a privilege.
