Today I'm posting a new blog about an astonishing scientific own goal. Hundreds of papers have reported using a completely wrong antibody to investigate the tumor suppressor p16. This mistake has happened because scientists have muddled the names of two proteins 🧵
This also applies to experts jumping subfields in AI × Bio. Work with people who know the new space well, or the science ends up reading DISCONNECTED FROM THE REALITY OF THE FIELD (bordering delusional). Hype might carry for a bit, but this isn’t startups. In science, truth wins.
From maize to mammalian cells, the next frontier is in multi-scale integration and automation. And meeting those challenges to accelerate drug discovery will require out-of-the-box thinking.
I am beyond excited to explore automation in biology across systems!
Today is my first day at @genentech in Dr. Aviv Regev's Lab.
Yes, yours truly, a (plant) geneticist. In a phenomenal group pioneering lab-in-the-loop methods to accelerate drug discovery.
In the age of AI, genetic circuits - whether in maize meristems or myeloid progenitors - are just sparse and modular circuits. Gene regulatory logic is just that: logic. Cells are nonlinear dynamical systems.
I’m excited to be attending the @ASPB#PlantBio2025 conference, Milwakee Wisconsin.
This year, we are presenting the @ASPB_ARN seeds of change award to scholars researching food security challenges in agrarian countries.
Calling all parents and educators! Do you know an 8th-12th grader curious about coding? Applications are now open for our FREE & VIRTUAL Youth Coding Camp! 🚀 No prior experience needed—just a passion for learning!

Similar to @plantpostdocs, PlantGrads aim to provide resources to current and prospective 🌱graduate students across the globe!
Somebody is giving students terrible advice on how to get into grad school. It's not the fault of students that write canned, generic, cut-and-paste "perfectly aligned with my interests" emails, it's the people that advise them to do it.
