@DavidAlGregory@FreedomofPress@karaswisher Direct me to a single time we said anything complimentary about Joe Biden’s record on press freedom.
You’re doing the exact same thing you’re accusing us of doing. If you think it was bad when Biden did it why are you ok with it now?
@taliaotg@FreedomofPress@brieannafrank I get the frustration. If Mamdani spoke up because people who don't gathering news get seats over those who do, that's a different convo. But he only cared when someone said something controversial. I don't think his position would change if they were more prolific Substackers.
@taliaotg@FreedomofPress@brieannafrank But the mayor's statements weren't prompted by anyone acting up, they were prompted by people saying things he didn't like.
*Everyone* should oppose government agencies forcing the people they investigate to keep quiet as a condition of settlement. Looking forward to talking w/ these smart folks about why that violates the letter and spirit of the First Amendment. Join us!
@Msrpaul1@FreedomofPress The constitution gives the press (and comedians) rights, not responsibilities. I'm all for those rights being exercised responsibly but if you think that's not happening, change the channel. Under the constitution, the government is who should sit this one out.
@UpstandingMembr@jfeldis@FreedomofPress Association is constitutionally protected. So is being an anarchist. Jargon isn't a substitute for a coherent explanation.
@jfeldis@FreedomofPress What was the evidence he was convicted of concealing? Zines. What crime did the zines contain evidence of? The First Amendment's protection doesn't depend on what label prosecutors use, it depends on the substance of the charges.
@VISAINAMERICA@FreedomofPress I don't think those have a stated mission of combatting "views, or opinions" that "are inimical to the interests of this state and the United States of America" and those states were not considering legislation to fight "ideologies inconsistent with American principles."
Incarcerated people have long faced discipline for reading literature that guards don't like. Now Daniel Sanchez Estrada is facing federal trial tomorrow for possessing anarchist zines.

@theQR_editor@johncusack Listen to the interview (cool thing about nonpaywalled content is you can look beyond the headline). We talk about how outlets that unpaywall public records reporting and other public service stories end up getting more subscribers and making more money.

@OrinKerr The exception requires probable cause that Natanson violated the EA. Judges decide whether probable cause exists for warrants. Wouldn't the PPA probable cause element then have to be disclosed? What's the alternative? Officers just get to think probable cause into existence?
