Had a photo-heavy Memorial Day schedule, and my part was just the high school band, Calmar ceremony and a replica P-51 Mustang that was on display. Altogether, our staff’s work made for some great pages in this week’s paper.
It might be overshadowed by another sentencing in this week’s paper, but this one has also been crossed off my watch list.

I was the only reporter at yesterday’s hearing. Unlike other outlets, the Decorah Leader got photos inside the courtroom and quotes from the victim. #supportlocaljournalism

Sometimes, being fair means making difficult decisions. This week, I had to make a call about how much coverage we’ll give our hometown candidate in his bid for governor.

Really fun to cover this for the second year and see more community groups like the sheriff’s office, Goodwill, the martial arts studio and even Luther’s student athletes join in.

This week’s edition includes Q&A responses from candidates who will be in contested primaries next month. There’s so much to read that I can’t even fit it all in a single photo, even if I pull out the broadsheets.
I seem to recall another outlet around here saying they were going to gradually expand into Calmar, but I didn’t see them at graduation this week. Oh well, probably not a sign of anything to come.

Eventually, I’ll have memorized all the folks dances and will be able to post up in just the right spot at the right time. Until then, I’ll just keep humming the tunes.

Fun fact: the wind was so strong that day the confetti was carried all the way to the other end of the block.

Gotta say, I thought I’d know my way around after touring the building earlier for a construction update, but I got turned around. It’s really a new space.

Had a great time getting photos as the kids made their way through the safety course. And got some good quotes about the importance of bike safety in Decorah, especially amid all the current construction.

It’s been a busy couple weeks, so I appreciate staff at Luther connecting me with Charles for this feature.

I figured this was a question many in Decorah might have. So I dove into our archives. The day we went to press, our designer said she overheard someone ask a friend who John Cline was. She pointed them to the paper.

Sentencing documents had yet to be filed as of publication, so there may be one more update before I cross this one off my list.

I finally made time to sit down and watch the 48 Hours segment which used some courtroom photos I took for the paper (starting around 35:50). Really cool to see how the crew used them to enhance the report. Good people to work with on a serious story.

Turned out the couple whose names I got after taking a different candid shot at Vesterheim made for an even better shot during the grand March, which then became the album cover.

Having dropped my own kids off there less than an hour after this, I think the scariest part is that police didn’t find the bullet. That said, I do feel for the family.

We’d been talking about this one with CBS since January. Another outlet beat us to the punch last month, but as @RussIowa taught me, “If you can’t be first, be better.” Thankful @nmoralestv made time to talk with us.

So far, both defendants have maintained their right to a speedy trial, and both cases are currently scheduled to be heard on June 10. I imagine that will change.
