Players don't get paid, so money goes back into grassroots, which gets kids involved and nurtured early, which makes them motivated to be hero of their county, which means everyone invested in the big games

Thomas St George McCarthy was one of the founders of the GAA, a Church of Ireland man (and RIC officer). Douglas Hyde also had a big role in promoting it.

Later there was an effort to make it 'pure' Irish, but Catholicism was not at its foundation
