Maralal Town in Samburu County, Kenya, has become globally known for its unique urban wildlife. Local residents have developed a remarkable and peaceful coexistence with wild animals, particularly plains zebras, which can routinely be seen wandering along the main streets, resting under petrol station awnings, and even grazing on the lawns of the Samburu County Assembly.

Maralal sits directly along an unfenced wildlife corridor. Over time, the animals have become semi-habituated to human activity as the town has grown around their traditional migration paths.

Severe droughts and changing weather patterns often force wildlife out of the arid rangelands and into the town centre in search of water, green lawns, and shrubs to feed on.

Murang'a County has launched a KSh 200 million school feeding programme in partnership with Food for Education to feed over 215,000 learners. Spearheaded by Governor Irungu Kang'ata, the initiative will provide highly nutritious meals to ECDE, primary, and junior secondary school students.
Parents will pay a subsidised rate of KSh 20 per day using high-tech wristbands preloaded via M-Pesa .

To support the rollout, 67 central kitchens are under construction, and the programme will source milk and mangoes directly from local Murang'a farmers. Daily meal distribution is scheduled to officially begin on January 11, 2027, following a phased registration and community training schedule.

DRAMA AT JKIA: Angry travelers have taken to social media to complain of alleged racial discrimination following last night's massive flight disruptions.

Last evening, Stranded passengers claim white travelers were swiftly escorted to comfortable hotels, while local Kenyans were left on the airport floor for long hours with little assistance.

Operations remain paralyzed due to a combination of an aviation staff go-slow and severe weather diversions. KAA has yet to issue an official statement regarding the profiling allegations.
