this tool can be a great outlet for marketing and managing businesses in a way that gives those a sense of control over their work environment and accommodations.
@EmergingSocial1 Before this week’s lesson, I really never considered the differences in how disabled people must maneuver social media compared to abled persons. Simple yet overlooked tools like subtitles and visual descriptions… #co575
aid in a way that gives people easier access to engage with social media. It can be difficult as a disabled person to function within a society that was built for abled bodied people. Because of the accessibility that social media brings to disabled people…
@medfletch#CO575 I think deepfakes, like most of the internet, are something that if left unchecked and unregulated can bring a lot of social and economic harm. It’s questionable as to why the government and internet platforms offer so little protection against these dangerous situations
@EmergingSocial1#CO575 in this weeks lecture we discussed the potential threats, specifically towards women, that come with deepfakes and deepnudes. Even if the victim’s actual body isn’t exposed, bc of its striking realism Deepfakes can be used as a means of revenge porn.
@nayeliparra25@EmergingSocial1 I always use the skin tone that matches my own and I do feel kind of unsettled when white use use brown and black emojis, especially in a man ironic or sarcastic way.
@nayeliparra25@EmergingSocial1#co575 as a poc I think representation can make a big difference in how we choose to perceive ourselves, even when it comes to small issues like the skin tone options for emojis.
These filters often drastically manipulate facial features to appear more ethic which further implies that black people and their cultural history is seen merely as a materialistic commodity
@EmergingSocial1#co575 platforms like Twitter foster supgroups like Black Twitter, where voices can be heard and ideas spread into full blown movements, much like BLM has in recent years. Black trends eventually bleed into popular white media where they are further exploited.
This emphasis of black culture as aesthetic/trend as opposed to a respected culture, is perpetuated in today’s beauty standards and social media through the use of filters.
@medfletch@EmergingSocial1 Hi Madison, I also felt conflicted by Micah Whites claims that marches and public protests aren’t relatively successful. Although these protests may not always bring immediate change, they do act as a catalyst for social change and progression.
@EmergingSocial1#co575 Occupy Wall Street sparked a change in how social movements interacted with both the media and their followers. Twitter and Facebook provided a space for Participatory Culture to thrive through the use of hashtags, sharing and even memes
@nayeliparra25@EmergingSocial1 I’ve heard google’s benefits are the reason for the companies appeal; but I find this to be a way for companies to draw in unsuspecting workers who eventually become numb to the working conditions and take advantage of their economic constraints which make it hard to leave.
@EmergingSocial1#co575 this week’s lecture we discussed the ethics behind google’s capitalistic gain. The exploitation and commodification of its users contradicts google’s image of a fair employer who prioritizes their employees’ work/life balance when they really don’t.
@thomasqphung@EmergingSocial1 Hi Thomas! I definitely relied on social media heavily during the pandemic for both entertainment and communication purposes. I think it made me realize how important social interaction really is, especially during traumatic events where physical interactions are hindered
@EmergingSocial1#co575 online dating has always had its stigmas but I think that has really changed with the pandemic. With everyone having to quarantine, dating apps became people’s main/only outlet for dating. It is far less frowned upon now to date online than it was before.
@Rfinn_@EmergingSocial1 I can see how valuable social media can play in exploring ones identity as well as providing a safe space and community for those participating. It’s a privilege to feel secure in your own sexuality… a privilege that many don’t get to experience at home. #co575
In some instances jobs may run a digital screening of your social media, and small businesses/creators tend to favor social media marketing for its affordability and accessibility. Our profiles become our first impression, in a world were first impressions matter most #co575
@EmergingSocial1 in our reading from the Verge, I see how “A lot of people, use their Instagram profile to represent who they are today,” and I can see how it has transformed into a valuable tool for marketing oneself within this technological sphere #co575
