A data center CEO just told a city council the quiet part out loud.

Doug Sevey runs data centers in Iowa, and he says the water crisis around facilities like Google’s isn’t inherent to the technology.

Closed-loop cooling, dry coolers, and immersion systems exist and use little to no consumptive water — his own facilities run on them. Evaporative cooling, the method behind the multi-million-gallon estimates for the proposed project near Palo, is popular because it’s the cheapest option on the table, not the only one.

A dry well doesn’t check who you voted for last November. We’re all downstream of the same council vote, whether we noticed the meeting happened or not. If approved as proposed, it would run on the cheaper system instead of one that would use far less water.

Would your city council approve the deal if they knew there were practical alternatives that used a fraction of the water?
