Half-Life (Valve, 1998) is not just a FPS but so much more. When I first played it, I could not believe how incredible it looked. Instead of just mindlessly blowing up enemies, the game also evolved around exploration and quite a lot of puzzles. For 1998 this was unheard of - at least I can't recall a game of that magnitude.

You take on the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist who has to escape from the Black Mesa Research Facility after it was overrun by aliens following a scientific experiment with disastrous consequences.

This game took me weeks, months... I don't think I ever played a better FPS/adventure crossover, ever.
