Is the #Bangladesh interim govt aware that the constant arrests of Awami League (AL) MPs as well as others linked to the former government in murder cases which are entirely groundless and partisan are giving grounds for every AL politician and activist to obtain asylum in the West?
There is something seriously wrong if, now, after two months in power, the government has not worked out a way to stop this practice. The government may say it is arresting relatively small numbers of people in these kinds of false cases. But that is no defence - an in addition these small numbers have significant repercussions. It means that hundreds of other Awami Leaguers/activists go into hiding, fearful of arrest, or not to show their faces in public. This is reminiscent of the situation before August 5th when it was Awami League's opponents in hiding.
Sure, the government has many challenges on its plate, but that is no reason for it not to comply with basic human rights standards. At present, in relation to dealing with the Awami League, the government is conducting itself in no different a way than the Awami League did to the Bangladesh Nationalist and Jamaat-e-Islami - arresting its opponents under false cases. This must stop if it wants to retain the support of those who thought the new government would bring in an improved era of human rights.
The government is getting many things right. But, on this issue, it is getting things very very wrong.
