What Happens When Kids Want to Quit an Activity:
At some point, every parent hears it "I don’t want to go to practice .”
Whether it’s martial arts, soccer, or dance, kids sometimes want to quit. But before making a decision, it’s important to pause and talk through it together.
📷 Start with a conversation – Ask why they’re feeling this way. Are they tired from school? Feeling discouraged? Struggling with a skill? Sometimes, they just need a confidence boost or a little extra help.
📷 Teach follow-through – In team sports, finishing the season is part of the commitment. Martial arts doesn’t have seasons, but learning to stick with something—even when it’s tough—is a valuable lesson.
📷 Consider a break instead of quitting – Some kids just need time to recharge. Others might want to explore another sport or hobby. Trying something new is great—quitting to stay home and watch TV? Not so much.
📷 Work with their instructor/coach – A little extra attention, a small goal to work toward, or even a training buddy can make a big difference. Let’s help them feel capable and motivated.
Kids’ interests change, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to force them into one activity forever, but to help them find what excites them and encourage resilience when things get tough.
At Sochin Martial Arts, we understand this, which is why we don’t believe in contracts for youth programs. Sometimes, a break is all a child needs. Sometimes, they’re ready to move on—and we support that too..
If your child is ever having a tough time finding there motivation to get on the mat, reach out to us. We would love to help you open up that communication and if possible, get them back to action with a smile on their face!
📷 Parents, what’s worked for you when your child wanted to quit an activity before you thought it was time?

If These TV & Movie Characters Stayed at Wish Me Luck Cottage…
Ever wonder where your favorite characters would vacation? We’re calling it now—Wish Me Luck Cottage in Brewster would be the ultimate getaway spot for some of TV & film’s most iconic personalities. Here’s what they’d be up to:
📷 Chief Brody (Jaws) – Even though he's still side-eyeing the water, he appreciates a shark-free, quiet Brewster beach day (because this part of the Cape is way more chill and if he's staying on the Bay he's going to need a SMALLER boat.)
📷 **Meryl Streep’s character in **Big Little Lies – She’d be on the deck, wrapped in a cozy sweater, drinking a glass of wine, and giving everyone a look like she knows something.
📷 The Stranger Things kids – Absolutely tearing up the Cape Cod Rail Trail on the cottage bikes, probably pretending they’re escaping the Upside Down. Bonus points if someone yells "Pedal faster, Mike!"
📷 Ron Swanson (Parks & Rec) – He’d spend 80% of his time by the fire pit, grilling a steak the size of a tire and appreciating the “lack of people ruining nature.”
📷 Tony Soprano – No question, he’s at JT's - the best lobster roll spot, loudly declaring it’s “not as good as New Jersey,” but we all know he secretly loves it.
📷 Moira Rose (Schitt’s Creek) – Packing only black and white resort wear for a dramatic beachfront photo shoot and referring to the cottage as “this charming bijou seaside retreat.”
📷 John Wick – Bringing his dog, obviously. And enjoying the fact that Wish Me Luck Cottage is pet-friendly (no assassins allowed, and you know we collected and extra damage deposit from this guy ).
📷 **Patrick Swayze in **Point Break – We don’t actually have huge waves, but you know Bodhi would be finding some way to surf.
The real question: which character are you on vacation? Fire pit griller, beach napper, bike explorer, or all of the above? Tell us below! 📷
You can be any character you want when you stay at Wish Me Luck Cottage.
