New paper 🎉
All about the genesis of the ‘specious present’ in Kelly’s (/Clay’s) work, & how it didn’t serve the purpose for him, vis-a-vis the perception of motion, often implied.
There’s also a lesson for contemporary debates re. temporal experience

Philosophical thought experiments can get somewhat whacky, but in fact they contain more insights than one might expect. With the help of philosopher @ShardlowJ, I wrote about the benefits of this mode of inquiry:

Now out - Discounting past experience and the utility of memory: an empirical study
We investigate the utility people assign to experiential memories & quantitatively compare the relative subjective weightings given to ‘primary’ & ‘secondary’ experiences

'Singular thought without temporal representation?' If animals are cognitively 'stuck in the present', can they nevertheless have thoughts about objects they can't currently perceive? https://t.co/ydHWT4ku5H

Now that the semester has ended, I’m going to spend at least the weekend living my most basic life, before the talks (and then marking) begin next week.
@PhDGoblin I’d be thoroughly disappointed if there was nothing to disagree with - I’m never sure I agree with everything I write which ends up published. Glad there was some joy in it!

@Guy_fletcher_ Alas, I learned on a steeper road (maybe with more cars), but after a little backyard practice first. My dad always believed in baptisms of fire!
With the ‘share the first Google image of the place you were born’ doing the rounds, you can really get the ‘I don’t fit in with others in the profession’ mindset roaring back.
Anyway, here’s Birkenhead:
@dbatherwoods My brother is a regular at Fazakerley, I know it well! We do have some nice coastal areas, and I suppose I might get different images for ‘Wirral’ or ‘Merseyside’, but Birkenhead goes on legal documents as my place of birth and those streets do make me a little nostalgic.
@dbatherwoods Yep, all made to share the look of the first one (in Bristol? I think?), down to photos of the owners’ grandparents. Didn’t realise they were in Stratford and Cov now too! I worked in ones on the Wirral and in Liverpool, before postgraduate study lured me away.
In this case, I look to outline how there are prima facie implications for discussions of the metaphysics of persistence – and, by extension, popular combinations of such views with particular views of the metaphysics of time.
I suggest we experience both objects and processes as having contrasting phenomenologies of persistence: plausibly objects are presented in experience as persisting over time by enduring (but see the paper for caution here), and processes as persisting by perduring.
