The commandment is more accurately translated as “You shall not murder,” rather than “You shall not kill.” The Bible clearly distinguishes murder from things like warfare and judicial execution, which it permits in certain circumstances. So I don’t think the contradiction is quite as simple as “the Bible says never kill, then God commands killing.”

That said, the passages where entire populations are commanded to be destroyed are definitely much harder questions morally, and people interpret those in different ways.

I personally have not experienced this. Generally, Jews don’t feel the need to argue about religion because they don’t believe everyone needs to be Jewish. They believe you can be a good person and practise your own faith as long as it aligns with the Noahide laws.

If I ask questions, they’re usually happy to answer them, but they also don’t seem particularly interested in convincing or converting me. Conversion simply isn’t the agenda.
