JC-W @Film_Rev_Daily impressed that Odyssey took almost same in 2nd weekend. #13 Animal Farm is Andy Serkis's animated version of Orwell novella. Heavily updated, animation is top-notch & chilling tale seems more prophetic than ever. James left cold & dispirited by The Dink, Apple TV movie from Ben Stiller about pickleball. Every joke signalled heavily. Netflix's Elize: Shadow of a Woman, true tale of murderess is unengaging and like so many channel's lurid true-crime tales. JC-W @Film_Rev_Daily says those who see The Odyssey in IMAX think it a masterpiece. Much less so if don't. Music seems irritating, dialogue often unintelligible, picture dark & starry cameos distracting. Often no idea what going on. And why a 15 for such a mild, unbloody film? Far happier with Heartstopper Forever, Netflix feature film based on its TV series. Enjoyable & surprisingly touching. Not so Enola Holmes 3 w. Milly Bobby Brown. Other 2 outings great; this feels like mediocre TV episode.

JC-W @Film_Rev_Daily not keen on #1, live action version of Moana. Lacks magic and feels like cartoon. #23, Rosebush Pruning is black comedy about family with abundance of problems on country estate. Stars likes of Jamie Bell, Callum Turner & Elle Fanning. It's a curate's egg with no narrative thrust. As is shocking & nasty in places, not for gentle souls. Highlight of week is Blu-Ray release of Oh! What a Lovely War, Richard Attenborough's directorial debut. A musical satire of WW1 with amazing star cast, it holds up remarkably well.

#2 Supergirl, says JC-W @Film_Rev_Daily, is disappointingly tedious, with a surprise 12A certificate, given the alcoholism & sex trafficking. #27 Blue Heron, Canadian film about childhood trauma, is self-indulgent, abtruse and unfathomable. Netflix's romcom Voicemails for Isabelle, looks great, has winning performances and dialogue so effervescent, worth watching again just for that. Sort of film that makes you happy to be alive. In the Hand of Dante, also Netflix, stars Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese and more but the intriguing modern thriller is weighed down by a plodding medieval biopic. It's half masterpiece, half disaster.

JC-W @Film_Rev_Daily says despite heatwave, box office up 72%, thanks to #1 Toy Story 5. Maintaining franchise's fantastic quality, it is vastly amusing but also very moving. With plot about damage screens are doing to children, has a joyful score, new characters & stellar voice cast. At #12 is Virginia Woolf's Night & Day, with Haley Bennett an astronomer suffering social mores of the day. It's very loose adaptation, with plot, class & language all making it seem more modern. Although kinetic, feels redundant, despite great central performance. James wondered why made at all. He did enjoy Netflix's Office Romance w. Jennifer Lopez & Brett Goldstein. Goldstein, famous from Ted Lasso, co-produced and co-wrote this romcom, which is silly & predictable but also an entertaining romp.

Keir Starmer suffering political death by a thousand cuts, says @Mike_Indian. But he seemed decent & honourable and did his best. Posterity will probably be kinder many current critics. Now seems certain Andy Burnham will be PM; right that won't be a distracting leadership contest. Burnham says will stick to Reeves's fiscal rules so will have to show a lot of creative thinking. His appointment of Chancellor will be crucial. We don't really know what a Burnham premiership will look like. Mike reflects that in the 9 years of The Bigger Picture, the world has become less certain place, politics inow a lot less kind and public trust in institutions & politicians has declined considerably.

Segro, once a warehouse REIT, now into data centres, has a tentative bid. @russmould1 @ajbell, says it's 16th bid for UK property company in 4 years, yet UK investors not interested in UK commercial property. 10-year gilt yields 4.7% against sector yield of 6.3%. Is that premium enough for the risks? If REITs believe the sector discount of 25%, why don't they buy back their own shares? It would be more positive for the sector than bids, even if bids show there are people overseas who see value there.
