🏆 Resident Evil Requiem could become the first Resident Evil game in over 20 years to win Game of the Year.

With Grand Theft Auto VI currently set to launch on November 19 and The Game Awards 2026 taking place on December 10, this year's Game of the Year race may come down to one unexpected factor. Timing.

📅 If Rockstar sticks to its current release date, GTA VI will arrive less than three weeks before gaming's biggest awards show. While The Game Awards has not officially announced its 2026 eligibility deadline, it has historically fallen on the third Friday of November. This year, that would be November 20, just one day after GTA VI is scheduled to launch.

That means the game could still qualify, but voters would have very little time to finish and properly evaluate what is expected to be one of the biggest and longest games ever made before casting their ballots.

That is where Resident Evil Requiem enters the conversation. 🤠👋

Released back in February, Requiem has already had months to build its case. The game currently holds an 89 Metacritic score, with 97% positive critic reviews and no negative reviews. Player reception has been just as impressive, with a 9.3 user score and 93% positive user ratings. It has also surpassed 8 million copies sold, making it the fastest selling game in Resident Evil history.

🔎 Resident Evil Requiem's Game of the Year chances are not just fan speculation. A recent analysis asked six independent AI models to evaluate the 2026 Game of the Year race without showing them any betting odds. Every model still ranked GTA VI as the favorite if it launches on time. However, they also agreed that Resident Evil Requiem would become the strongest contender if GTA VI misses the eligibility window.

But for the first time in more than two decades, Resident Evil is not just hoping for a nomination.

💯 It has a real chance to compete for gaming's biggest award.

The last Resident Evil game to win the industry's top Game of the Year honor at the Spike Video Game Awards, the predecessor to today's The Game Awards, was Resident Evil 4 in 2005.

More than twenty years later, Resident Evil Requiem may have the franchise's best opportunity to bring that trophy home once again.
