Swallowed by a black tsunami.
300,000 cubic meters of mud, crushed cars, and shattered airplanes.
The runway was buried two feet deep.

Aviation experts gave their verdict: "It will take at least six months to reopen."

Then the US Air Force 320th Special Tactics Squadron arrived.

These aren't airport janitors.
These are Combat Controllers (CCT).
The deadliest, most elite special forces in the military, trained to parachute behind enemy lines and seize runways under sniper fire.

They carried no weapons this time.
They carried shovels.

They dropped from helicopters into the wasteland.
They slept on the frozen floor of a ruined terminal in sub-zero cold.
No complaints. No cameras. No rest.
They shoveled black, freezing mud shoulder-to-shoulder with Japanese workers for 72 straight hours.

Day three: The impossible happened.
The mud was gone.

A massive US Air Force C-130 Hercules dove out of the clouds and touched down on the runway with a roar.
Tires smoking. Cargo bay doors swinging open with tons of food, water, and medicine.

Six months?
They did it in THREE DAYS.

Sendai wept.

Sailors gave up their OWN fresh water.
They stopped taking hot showers.
They ate cold rations.

Why?
To produce tens of thousands of gallons of pure, uncontaminated drinking water for Japanese babies.

Mechanics with radiation badges worked through the night on snow-covered decks so helicopters could fly non-stop rescue sorties.

While the world backed away in terror,
American sailors ran through the fire for us.

I watched the towers fall in 2001. I was a young man in 7th grade. I remember coming downstairs for the bus when the second plane hit. When I got to school we watched them fall. Nobody knew who it was, why it happened, or what to do from here. We only knew we wanted to help and find whoever did it.

10 years later I was standing in malijat Afghanistan, continuing the fight against those responsible. Every day looking and patrolling. We seized territory the Russians never could, in areas the Russians never went. 2 brave men from my platoon would never come home from that dusty Hell hole.

I was pulling into Kandahar airfield when it was announced that the man behind that fateful day in 2001 was killed. Hiding in another country like the coward he was.

I later served with young men and women who never saw the towers fall. Never experienced that day first hand. They still raised their right hand as I did to serve. We are obligated to help them understand what our country endured.

I remember.

The 9/11 Memorial "Tear Drop" sit's directly across from NYC, in Bayonne New Jersey, just the other side of the Statue of Liberty, yet we hear nothing about it.

This beautiful, 100 ft tall monument was gifted to the people of the United States by the people of Russia in 2006, in memory of all those who lost their lives on that fateful day, September 11, 2001.

The breaking in the cracked façade forms the shape of the two towers.
The giant suspended tear drop signifies the tears of the entire world that day.

Maybe it's something that needs to be known, starting today.
