After a heroic rescue, Garrett Morgan - inventor of the safety hood and three-light traffic signal - was denied the Carnegie Medal by the city of Cleveland, an honor only awarded to white rescuers. In defense of his dignity and innovations, Morgan wrote a letter to the Mayor of Cleveland stating, “I am not a well-educated man; however, I have a Ph.D. from the school of hard knocks and cruel treatment.” Morgan’s story is a powerful reminder that true excellence cannot be suppressed, despite pervasive opposition.
