My clinical educator recently showed me this wonderful article that outlines implications to consider when working with older patients with #dysphagia. It discusses things like #modifieddiets and medication intake and the importance of oral hygiene.

I had a patient who was admitted to ED ?stroke and had PMHx of Sjogren's. It causes dry mouth making it was hard to eat dry foods . Comp strategy was a fluid wash during and after swallowing to clear residue. So important to look up PMHX before seeing a client. #SLP2Be#immune
Almost CRIED (happy tears) the other day when I was at a park in Bankstown and saw this low tech #aac board! They also have wheelchair accessible swings as part of their new inclusive park. Beautiful way to celebrate #aacmonth
This week in placement, I was completing a swallowing assessment with a women who had a hyperactive gag reflex when swallowing but when distracted her swallowing improvement. This made me think about @CathGregorySP lecture and psychogenic swallowing,so cool! #swallowing#hospital
Interesting fact from placement yesterday: people with dysphagia who work in airports may need a doctor letter to bring thickening powder/liquid to work. The impact of dysphagia on work/travel is even wider than I originally thought 🤔 #dysphagia#slp2b
A chaotic QI project draft with @Sheldon_Speech! Suprising how many out-of-scope referrals we get in hospital e.g. problems taking medication. That's pharmacy's job! Hopefully our dysphagia referral flowchart can help with that. 😊 #dysphagia#outpatient#slp2b
Did you know COPD patients have a higher risk of aspiration ? Due to the abnormal swallow to breath ratio and reduced lung capacity , this causes these patients to inspire after swallowing instead of expire. Leading to risk of aspiring & ⬇️ airway protection #COPD#awareness#SLP
@CathGregorySP@emily_au_ and I did . The VFSS Image is so much clearer than I remember from class . So cool to see it in real life and observe the discussion between two speeches !!
Key highlights this week;Frenchay dysarthria assessment , watching a VFSS and being tested on anatomical landmarks , learning about how COPD affects swallowing and risk feeding . This week has been jammed packed of triage meetings, swallowing assessments and notes #SLp2be#VFSS
When researching Rehabillation Centres which provide group therapy for a patient. Uniting War Memorial Hospital who provide specialist assessment, education and advice, as well as individual and group intervention and support programs for PPA clients. How amazing !! #PPA#SLP
For many people, #DLD is lifelong, but funding and service cut-offs are often arbitrary and coincide with when adolescents and are looking for help. More: https://t.co/OX8RcxJVNX #devlangdis#slpeeps#SLP2B#DLDDay
First week done at St Vincent’s .Planned to observe a swallowing trial and complete a language assessment however one patient wasn’t conscious enough and the other denied consent. However, learnt how to determine when it isn’t safe for client/clinician to complete an assessment!
@AlaouieYara@emily_au_ Thanks for this interesting article Yara !! Delirium and fatigue plays such a huge role in hospital safety and will produce assessment results which are not representative of the patients potential .
