Until yesterday, I saw this purely as a waste of state resources, but after seeing that they have kept doing it for decades, I decided to look deeper.
The socio-economic data tells a different story.
These mass weddings are functioning as targeted wealth redistribution and a major stimulus for the informal sector.
These programs don't target the middle class; they target demographics priced out of the traditional family structure: orphans, widows of insecurity, and the extreme poor.
Of course, culturally, a poor person doesn't see marrying more than one wife as an issue 🤣. The package (like Kano’s ₦1m) is essentially a direct asset transfer.
It’s not cash for a party. It’s seed capital, foodstuff, and household assets. For destitute individuals, this serves as the foundational capital to start a micro-business and establish a self-sustaining household economy where traditional banking/credit fails.
Now, follow the procurement money. Sourcing wardrobes, beds, and textiles for 1,500 couples acts as a massive localised stimulus package. By procuring locally, billions are injected directly into the grassroots informal economy, keeping artisans, tailors, and traders liquid.
There’s also a hidden public health calculation. A strict prerequisite for these weddings is medical screening (Genotype, HIV, Hepatitis). For states with strained healthcare budgets, preventing congenital or terminal diseases saves billions in long-term public health costs.
Finally, risk mitigation. The family unit is the primary social safety net here. A large demographic of unsupported widows or disenfranchised, unattached youth is a major security risk. Facilitating stable households acts as a preventative welfare and security measure.
Are there better long-term investments?
Absolutely.
Education and infrastructure must take priority.
But good public policy analysis requires looking at cultural context.
What looks like "misplaced priorities" on paper is actually a highly adapted, grassroots safety net.
Anyone who pursues a theater Arts degree will be told about the Alarinjo theatre & Hubert Ogunde. The latter was the one shooting with celluloid films; that is the sophisticated camera he is trying to allude to.
The revisionist agenda is just out of envy & the objective is to remove as much Yoruba as possible from areas that they have historically pioneered in Nigeria.
That revisionist nonsense is an ongoing phenomenon. There are people who have cornered media presentation in the hipe that they can curate media content in wats that will rewrite documented & experienced history.
That is why we must not relent in correcting the lies.
The unforced show of strength by Arsenal in the past few days should leave no one in doubt about how big and elite a club Arsenal is despite not having UCL trophy.
Anyone still thinking Manchester City or Chelsea is a bigger clib than Arsenal should have their head checked.
It goes beyond trophy, it is pedigree.
Took my girls to watch the Arsenal parade. Life tends to be full of routine, but if you plan it, some days will live forever. And today will live forever in my heart and mind. #COYG
If you talk more about another club than your own, that club is bigger than your club.
If you need to borrow the success of other clubs to mock another club, that club is better than your club.
If you are living in the past, it is because you are uncomfortable with the present.
I actually agree and can’t fault having a PSG player as the MOTM because they won but it would be so nice if awards are given without certain contexts.
For the 120 mins’ the ball was in play for, there was no better player on that pitch yesterday than Gabriel Magalhaes.
When Jay-Z said, “in perpetuity is how your contract is worded” in that shot at Drake via the Roots show, I remember replying a foreign organisation who had “in perpetuity” all over the contract they sent to me via email.
I replied them to say I am not signing anything away in perpetuity. Picked out other holes in that contract but the “in perpetuity” bit was the most annoying lol. This was during Covid when more money was never a bad idea.
They never got back to me. I wasn’t expecting them to. I am clear-eyed about my game. I’d rather lose a cent now than take a cent to lose in the future, in perpetuity.
Love them, hate them, the Arsenal is emotional. They make you feel something. They make you care.
Whether you’re rooting for them or against them, you can’t ignore them. And that’s my football club.
Goodnight. ❤️
An unbelievable season which didn’t end in the way we all dreamed of. That doesn’t change the fact we are still champions of England!
Looking forward to celebrating that with the thousands of fans tomorrow in North London!
Thank you for all the support this season ❤️
The fact that the entire Premier League unites to pray on our downfall just shows how massive Arsenal truly is.
They hate us because they’re terrified of where this team is going.
Proud of the boys for getting to the final. We win together, we lose together.
We will be back.
Amazing season regardless. Gutted to lose the Champions League on Penalties after horrible refereeing. We go again. What a season. The parade will be amazing tomorrow. COME ON YOU GUNNERS
