Professor of structural engineering. I only use Twitter to read news. Nothing of value to see here, not worth a follow. Retweets are for me to read later.
Canada has the smallest population of G7 countries. It therefore has the smallest GDP of G7 countries.
Italy is like 50% larger, France and UK more than 75% larger. Germany is like 2x Canada. Japan is 3x Canada. US is like 9x Canada.
In terms of GDP per capita, Canada is behind the US, roughly tied with Germany and the UK, and ahead of France, Italy and Japan.
Its stock market has outperformed the UK, Italy, Germany, France, Japan and the US over the past 18 months, per OP.
It is the only G7 country besides Germany with AAA ratings, per OP.
hope this helps
This "journalist" is telling Brad Bradford, the runner-up for Toronto mayor, to end his life.
She writes for several publications, including @nytimes and @globeandmail.
Remember when major outlets would cut ties with journos over vile slop like this? Now they hire them.
This paper answers why confident idiots run the world.
Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy.
It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.”
they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception.
And the results are wild.
participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile.
they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence.
the paper revealed a brutal paradox:
the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain.
if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing.
this creates a dangerous systemic loop.
the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions.
meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse.
top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else.
they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add.
we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence.
the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't.
the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

Dan Rather spots trouble Trump can't avoid much longer: 'Subject is bound to come up'
"Most Americans don’t want to think about it, but in the background of these developments is this: Article III, Section 3 of the Constitution defines treason against the United States as 'levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.' By any objective measure, lifting Russian sanctions is giving aid and comfort to an enemy," Rather argued.

Christopher Hitchens: ”In 1786, when the United States was barely a country, it was having its sailors taken as slaves by the Barbary states, the states of the Ottoman Empire and North Africa. Tripoli, shores of Tripoli. Ships stopped, its crews carried off into slavery. We estimate 1.5 million European and American slaves taken between 1750 and 1815.
Jefferson and Adams went to their ambassador in London and said, why do you do this to us? The United States has never had a quarrel with the Muslim world of any kind. We weren't in the crusades. We weren't at war with Spain. Why do you do this to our people and our ships? Why do you plunder and enslave our people? The ambassador said very plainly, Mr. Abdul Rahman said, because the Quran gives us permission to do so, because you are infidels, and that's our answer. Jefferson said, well, in that case, I will send a navy which will crush your state, which he did.
Islamic fundamentalism is not created by American democracy. It's a lie to say so. It's a masochistic lie, and it excuses those who are the real criminals, and blames us for the attacks made upon us.”
Watching journalists cover a BS flying Tesla car instead of the deaths of women and children in Ukraine because Starlink was slowed down is disgusting.
It's absolutely disgusting.
Spend any time watching the campaigns of border state Republicans, and this is what you will see. Republicans are consistently denouncing Donald Trump's trade war against Canada.
The strategy deployed by the Canadian government here seems to be working. Use counter-tariffs and effective messaging to make U.S. trade policy against Canada politically unpopular to the extent that it loses congressional support. Furthermore, to make it so politically unpopular that a future U.S. administration has to at least think twice before trying it on again.
This is basically the only play that the Canadian government could make if it were going to avoid having to make bilateral concessions before CUSMA renegotiations actually begin.
It's only rhetoric now. We don't have any meaningful results yet. But there's a pathway out of this for the Canadian government that looks promising.
So why are you even here?
If you really believe that “Canada is a white supremacist, racist, colonial project” and you “don’t even consider (yourself) to be Canadian because this is occupied indigenous land,” then maybe you should end your part in the occupation and leave.
Or do you prefer to denigrate Canada as a dystopian hellscape while benefitting from the country that hard working people have built over centuries, including a prosperous market economy, enormously generous social benefits, and the rule of law in a rights respecting liberal democracy?
I don’t apologise for my language, if you are marching for Hamas tomorrow on the 3rd anniversary of the biggest slaughter of innocent Jews since WW2, you’re a sick fuck.
Sorry, let me see if I got all this...
Dr. Karl Deisseroth was jointedly awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology yesterday.
He's a professor of bioengineering, psychiatry, and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, where he earned his medical degree and a PhD in neuroscience.
His Nobel Prize win capped off the past decade of earning other prestigious honors, including the Japan Prize, the Heineken Prize, the Horwitz Prize, and the Kyoto Prize.
He is married to Dr. Michelle Monje, who is a neuroscientist and professor of neurology at Stanford. She is also an MD and PhD.
Last year, she won the Brain Prize, which is one of the world's most prestigious honors in neuroscience. That capped off the past decade of honors for her, including the Ross Prize, the Marks Prize, the Lounsbery Award, and a MacArthur Genius Grant.
They have four children. They have a great home life. They are both respected and well-liked by their colleagues.
They appear to be two good human beings doing very good work in the world to help other human beings while balancing a happy and healthy family life and supporting each other's careers, both of which are among the most accomplished in their respective fields.
Did I get all that?
Here's what's going to happen. Trump loses the midterms. He declares massive voting fraud, calls supporters to attack immediately. GOP refuses to accept results. FBI seizes ballots and voting machines within days. Results stall for weeks. Republican officials cancel results in lost districts, order new votes. Protests erupt. Troops deploy under the Insurrection Act. January 3, Congress refuses to seat the Democrats. This isn't prediction. It's pattern. They've already done each of these things.
