Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan Abducted and Taken to an Undisclosed Location While Travelling to AJK

On July 28, 2026, former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, accompanied by his team, set out for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) carrying white flags to express solidarity with the innocent people of Kashmir who have lost loved ones due to violence by security forces. However, he was stopped at the Azad Pattan Bridge and denied entry into AJK, prompting him to record a formal protest.

While returning to Islamabad, at approximately 7:07 PM, Punjab Police stopped him at Kahuta Bazar and forcibly took him away in his vehicle. The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for Kahuta Circle, Waqar, seized control of the car by taking over the steering wheel from the driver. Other vehicles following Mushtaq Ahmad Khan were temporarily halted and subsequently allowed to continue on their way.

Uncertain about his whereabouts, we contacted Senator Mushtaq Khan and requested that he share his live location via WhatsApp. Through this means, we discovered that he had been transferred to Rawat Police Station, located on G.T. Road. Upon arriving at the police station, our team made every effort to meet with Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, however, access was denied by the police.

The last communication we received from Senator Mushtaq was at 12:26 AM on July 29, in which he informed us that police officials indicated that some senior officials from Rawalpindi wished to meet with him. He stated that the precise outcome and reasons for his abduction would be revealed following that meeting. Since that time, we have had no further information regarding his location.

Our team reached out to Rawat Police Station at 1:20 AM, where Daniyal Abdullah, Chief Organizer of the Pakistan Rights Movement (PRM), spoke with SHO Raja Iftikhar. The SHO outright denied that Senator Mushtaq was ever brought to the Rawat Police Station and claimed to have no knowledge of his whereabouts.

Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan is a prominent political leader and internationally recognised human rights advocate. He has previously participated in two flotilla missions aimed at breaking the siege of Gaza. His forced disappearance in broad daylight raises significant concerns and highlights the lack of rule of law in Pakistan. No arrest warrant, formal charge or legal justification was presented to his accompanying team. At the time of issuing this statement, the authorities had not disclosed:

* His current location or physical condition;
* The legal grounds for his detention;
* The police station or agency holding him; or
* Whether any criminal case has been registered against him.

Urgent Appeal

We call upon the Government of Pakistan and the Government of Punjab to:

1. Immediately disclose Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan’s location;
2. Guarantee his physical safety and access to his family and legal counsel;
3. Produce him before a competent court without delay;
4. Publicly clarify the legal basis for his detention; and
5. Release him immediately unless he is charged with a recognisable criminal offence through due process.

We urge all political parties, political leaders, Local & international human-rights organisations, diplomatic missions, parliamentarians, Palestine-solidarity networks and democratic institutions to *immediately raise his detention with the Pakistani authorities and demand confirmation of his safety and whereabouts.

My Kashmiri friend, who lives in Islamabad and has always proudly called himself a completely ‘Apolitical person’ is now extremely worried about the situation in Kashmir and keeps posting stories about it non stop and cursing PML-N & PPP.

I still remember arguing with him after 26 November incident. Back then he insisted that those who died were not martyrs, that they had simply died for a political cause, and so on.

This is a reminder for everyone: hawa kisi ki saggi nahi hoti.

Don’t celebrate anyone’s tragedy, because tomorrow it can come knocking on your own door. And no, being “apolitical” is not cool, it’s not wise, and it’s not a flex. When the storm reaches you, that neutral stance disappears real fast.
