A disturbing story circulating online claims that 47-year-old Simeon Okoh of Abuja developed severe symptoms after eating roadside-sliced watermelon, and was later diagnosed with diphtheria.

However, the claim that the watermelon caused his diphtheria has not been independently verified.

What is confirmed is that diphtheria is a serious, potentially life-threatening bacterial infection. It can cause difficulty swallowing, neck swelling (“bull neck”), breathing problems, heart complications and nerve damage.

Diphtheria is primarily spread through respiratory droplets, direct contact and contaminated objects—not ordinarily through eating watermelon.

If you're in Abuja or elsewhere, don't panic—but take food hygiene seriously, avoid questionable food handling, and make sure you and your children are vaccinated.

If you develop symptoms suggestive of diphtheria, seek medical attention immediately.
