The Legend of the Madanbashi Sea Dragon

One of the most famous legends takes place in the village of Madanbashi (modern-day Naha), which was routinely terrorized by a ferocious sea dragon that destroyed property and preyed on villagers.
One day, the King of Ryukyu visited the village while wearing a small figurine of a Shisa necklace given to him as a gift by a Chinese diplomat.
During his visit, the sea dragon attacked. A local priestess (noro), guided by a prophetic dream, instructed a boy to tell the king to hold his Shisa figurine high toward the monster.
When the king raised the amulet, it emitted a roar so earth-shattering that it shook the entire village and froze the dragon. Suddenly, a massive boulder fell from the heavens, crushing the dragon's tail and trapping it until it perished.
The area eventually grew into the lush Gana-mui Woods, and the villagers built a massive stone Shisa to guard against the dragon's lingering spirit.
