✨ Vijayadashami & Durga Visarjan — Two Sacred Traditions, One Auspicious Day ✨
The tenth day of Navratri is celebrated as Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra. This auspicious day is also observed as Durga Visarjan, marking the ceremonial farewell to Maa Durga following the grand celebrations of Durga Puja.
Although both occasions fall on the same day in many traditions, Vijayadashami and Durga Visarjan are two distinct observances, each carrying its own meaning, rituals and spiritual message.
🏹 1. Vijayadashami — The Victory of Dharma over Adharma
Vijayadashami commemorates the triumph of righteousness over evil and truth over falsehood.
This day celebrates Lord Rama’s victory over the ten-headed Ravana, symbolising the ultimate triumph of dharma over adharma. The burning of Ravana’s effigies during Dussehra represents the destruction of arrogance, greed, anger and ego.
In the tradition of Navratri, Vijayadashami also celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, signifying the restoration of cosmic balance and the triumph of divine Shakti over destructive forces.
✨ Spiritual message: True victory begins within. When we overcome ego, anger, ignorance and negativity, we allow truth, compassion and wisdom to guide our lives.
🌺 2. Durga Visarjan — A Sacred Farewell to Maa Durga
Durga Visarjan is an important ritual associated with Durga Puja, especially in West Bengal and other regions where the festival is celebrated with elaborate community worship.
After days of devotion, prayers and festivities, devotees bid farewell to Maa Durga by immersing her idol in a river or other designated body of water, in accordance with local traditions and environmental guidelines.
The ritual symbolises the Goddess’s return to her divine abode and the cyclical nature of creation, preservation and dissolution. It also reminds devotees that although the physical form is immersed, the Divine Mother’s presence and blessings remain in their hearts.
The farewell is often accompanied by prayers, devotional songs, Sindoor Khela in many Bengali communities, and heartfelt wishes for the Goddess to return the following year.
✨ Spiritual message: Every arrival carries the promise of departure, and every farewell holds the hope of reunion. Durga Visarjan teaches us devotion, acceptance, gratitude and the beauty of letting go.
🙏 A Prayer for Vijayadashami and Durga Visarjan
May Lord Rama guide us on the path of truth, and may Maa Durga bless us with courage, wisdom and strength to overcome all challenges.
As we celebrate the victory of good over evil and bid farewell to Maa Durga, may her divine blessings remain with us, bringing peace, happiness and prosperity until she returns again.
