The FCRA Bill going to a JPC has triggered panic in the very ecosystem that should be worried about FCRA reform.

Apparently, asking Parliament to scrutinise a sensitive law now means “Modi has surrendered.”

What a ridiculous standard.

A government that has pushed through CAA, Waqf reforms, IBC and major regulatory changes is hardly going to abandon FCRA because a parliamentary committee is examining it.

In fact, the opposite is true.

If the objective is to tighten the foreign funding regime, the law needs to be airtight. Every loophole needs to be examined. Every constitutional challenge needs to be anticipated. Every possible legal escape route needs to be closed.

The battle over FCRA will not end when Parliament passes the Bill. It will move to the courts and the public arena immediately.

So build the law accordingly.

JPC is not retreat. It is battlefield preparation.

And those celebrating today may want to wait for the final legislation.
