Some background: Bhai Amritpal Singh led a grassroots anti-drug campaign last year to counter the central state-sponsored flooding of narcotics (labelled the “silent genocide” of Sikh youth) in the state of Punjab

He successfully got 1000s of Sikh youth off drugs and into Sikhi by taking Khande da Pahul (initiation into the Khalsa)

This won him many powerful enemies, as the drug trade involves high ranking government and police officials. They ran a huge propaganda storm against him, labelling him as a terrorist and a danger to national security

In March/April last year, the Indian government led a nation-wide manhunt to arrest Bhai Amritpal Singh. This involved deployment of 80,000 personnel, suspension of internet services for 5 days and checkpoints throughout the state of Punjab

Despite this, Bhai Amritpal Singh escaped through the will of God, and was arrested over a month later only when he voluntarily gave himself up

He has been locked away under Draconian NSA laws for over a year alongside numerous associates, 1000s of miles away in Dibrugarh Jail

His landslide victory in this election indicates the ground-level sentiments of the people and their frustration with tyrannical and corrupt government.
