First thing you should always check for when Steam reviews look like this is performance issues. Theyre notoriously harsh on games for performance. Look for that complaint first and if it’s there it’s not the game itself
South of Midnight cost $100,000,000 to make and no one bought it.
You can win all the awards.
And critical acclaim.
It means nothing.
Those are fake metrics.
Did gamers buy it?
Did it generate profit?
No?
Then you failed. Simple.
Generate a return on investment or get fired.
Fucking wild to me how many people in the replies of posts like this and mine are licking the corporate boot of a company that made over $200B in profit last year as if they can’t sustain these teams and eat some losses on games to keep building institutional talent.
Played a bit of the SAO demo yesterday. Felt pretty good. Probably the thing that surprised me the most was how good the AI for your companion seems to be.
People don’t want to hear this, but Microsoft sees where things are headed with AI. There’s just not going to be room in big studios anymore for expensive niche games especially the ones chasing even narrower audiences or the ones that feel to gamers like they’re deliberately pushing political or identity angles. Gamers are going to start making their own stuff/slop with these tools soon enough, so why would they keep buying what they see as overpriced niche slop from studios, whether that perception is fair or not? There is no putting the genie back in the bottle. It’s over.
According to entertainment lawyer Simon Pulman on LinkedIn, both South of Midnight and The Outer Worlds 2 had budgets of around $100 million each, including development and marketing costs.
Pulman also claimed South of Midnight sold roughly 500,000 copies, while The Outer Worlds 2 sold around 1 million copies.
How in the hell did South of Midnight cost that much money, At this point, one thinks it is money laundering there is no other way.
I prompted Claude Fable 5 to use Python to generate a 9:16 social video and render it using ffmpeg. Told it to put its own personal spin on it so it’s aligned with Anthropic’s launch and to fully express what it’s like to be an LLM hated by Theo from its POV.
It made this lmfao.
