Another reason to oppose Washington Gas, owned by a foreign company

[AG Brian Schwalb @DCAttorneyGen]

@DCOPC @SierraDC Skyrocketing utility bills are worsening DC's affordability crisis.

Any plan the Commission approves must keep the community safe from dangerous gas leaks, ensure project funds are spent wisely, and protect ratepayers from excessive rate increases.

[Brian Schwalb @BrianforDC]

Thank you to Mark Rodeffer and the Sierra Club for your endorsement and support! Brian Schwalb is an advocate for the precious natural spaces in DC we often take for granted, and we need fighters like him to protect them when others refuse to step up. @SierraDC

[Zach Teutsch @zteutsch]

I am again asking, why doesn't McDuffie simply return the money he took from Trump and MAGA donors? He could do it in 5 minutes with an email.

He should start by refunding Jeff Wall, Trump's former Solicitor General who won key cases to dismantle the CFPB and ending Roe.

[Amanda Michelle Gomez @amanduhgomez]

During all of 2025, Kenyan McDuffie held an hour (and 3 minutes) worth of oversight as chair of the committee responsible for utilities.

No wonder our Pepco bills skyrocketed under his watch!

[Sierra Club DC Chapter @SierraDC]

@kenyanmcduffie Janeese Lewis George wasn’t on the committee and McDuffie complains she didn’t attend his lackluster committee hearings where he provided ZERO oversight of utility regulators as rates were SKYROCKETING. The only thing we have to say to Kenyan McDuffie: LOL.

[Zach Teutsch @zteutsch]

Our Pepco bills have skyrocketed faster than anywhere else in the country.

Kenyan: it's not my fault!

Also Kenyan: My dedicated volunteer just happens to be the longtime Pepco Executive I worked with to raise rates👇

[Charles Allen @charlesallen]

I see a woman who’s gracious to a departing colleague on his last day as he resigns from office, looks to find common ground, and shows value in public service. Interesting choice to turn that around and use it as fodder for a campaign ad. That choice says more than she did.

[Alex Taliadoros @AlexCTaliadoros]

DC had the chance to lock in lower renewable energy rates in 2018 with the Clean Energy DC Act.

As Council Committee Chair, McDuffie stripped the provision from the bill as a favor to Pepco lobbyists.

Today, DC residents are paying ~$24 more a month as a result of the decision.

[Sierra Club DC Chapter @SierraDC]

@kenyanmcduffie 3) Is Kenyan McDuffie so out of touch that he really does not think DC has a Pepco/utility regulation problem?

[Sierra Club DC Chapter @SierraDC]

@kenyanmcduffie 2) Why did McDuffie help Pepco avoid being required to lock in clean energy contracts in 2022 which would have already reduced Pepco customer costs by millions of dollars annually?

[Charles Allen @charlesallen]

Ears were 🔥 during tonight’s Mayoral debate. Gotta fact check tho. The amendment referenced providing better childcare for working parents wasn’t mine alone, it was collaborative leadership with Janeese. We wrote it together & changed lives and bank accounts for thousands. 1/2

[Sierra Club DC Chapter @SierraDC]

Former Councilmember Mary Cheh seemed to think in 2023 that McDuffie was in the pocket of at least one monied interest, or as she called it when McDuffie did the bidding of monopoly utility Washington Gas, “bonafides to the company.”

Like my primary opponent, I participate in DC’s Fair Elections program, which limits donations at 200 dollars and forbids the use of donations from corporate or traditional PACs.

I chose to participate in the Fair Elections program as a reflection of my values and my belief that no individual or organization should have undue influence over my policy decisions or campaign promises. As with my primary opponent, I do not have control over which members of the community choose to contribute to my campaign, or their individual ideologies.

As Mayor, the only person who will be charge of me is you: all 700,000 residents of the District of Columbia. I look forward to continuing to participate in the Fair Elections Program and working to fight and deliver for ALL of DC.

The Sierra Club is proud to endorse environmental allies Matt Frumin and Zachary Parker for DC Council and Attorney General Brian Schwalb for re-election.

They’ve spent the last four years cutting pollution and advancing clean energy in DC.

We endorse @Janeese4DC for mayor. She has a record of fighting for clean energy, working to lower utility bills with energy efficiency, and cutting pollution in our city. She is the bold leader we need to deliver meaningful results for DC.
